cost of private number plate

Just passed a black range rover on the A1 and saw the number plate 1 PK, that must be a very early number, believe the very first was A 1 any ideas how much it must have cost?

It depends on when it was purchased and if it was purchased and hasn't just been handed down. A mate of mines has a very early Edunburgh number which has been in his family since the plate was assigned to a car his great grandfather had. So not all plates have been bought by the person who is displaying it.

It's also only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

If it was sale today it would command the very high thousands but again only if someone wanted to buy it and had the money.
Both myself and my mum have received contact from these plate companies looking to purchase our plates for a lot more than what was paid for them at the outset, however they mean something to us and mines was a gift for my 18th so I won't sell it. Ever.

Out of curiosity, do you know how they got hold of your contact details?

DVLA have very strict rules (based on the Data Protection Act) as to when they will provide the keeper's details for a given registration mark, and a far as I am aware, "I would like to make an offer to purchase that number" is not a sufficiently strong reason.

I don't have a clue. We just ignored the letters and shredded them and heard nothing after that. If it had been a constant or more than one request we would have taken it up with the DVLA and the company directly.
 
They just write in to the DVLA pretending to a private punter, claim you scraped their car or whatever, and need to chase you for insurance details. Easy enough. There's a small fee, a few quid.

As for plate prices, I saw GS 5 for sale yesterday (when I was casually lookin', you know...) for £65k. Even if they settled for half of that it's still a bonkers price.
 
On the DVLA website you can see what numbers were sold at auction for. The prices exclude Auctioneer fees, Vat and transfer fees. They don't tell you who owns it though.

I just looked and 1 PK wasn't sold at auction.

There's alive auction running right now (24 Sep 2014) - I'm watching it.... Some plates going for way way over the reserves.

those companies rarely offer to buy, they quote you a great price that they then advertise it on their site and then if they get an interested party they handle the sale for a fee and commission, ask them if they will buy it for cash , they cant get off the phone quick enough.

I'm aware of those, thanks - just hadn't realised that wanting to make an offer for the number plate would be sufficient reason for the DVLA to release the keeper's details.

Unlike Sweden (where I understand there is a directory publicly available showing who owns what car), here in the UK we don't normally give that information away without good reason - imagine a car thief wanting to know where a Z4/Ferrari/whatever is normally parked, or a stalker who has taken a fancy to your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend, or that nutter with anger management issues who imagines that you cut him up this morning ...

(I was interested in the comments on 1PK. My initials are PK, and PKZ4 was available for around £3k recently, which would look cool if I could space it as PK Z4. Unfortunately the price was just too much, especially for a plate that wouldn't mean anything if I ever changed the Z4 for another car).
 
Bloke near me has 7 WT on his car. Looks great. Been on a few prestigious motors since i've lived here.
