To cut a long story short I have pulled a cord from the centre of the rear bulkhead in my Z4.. it's a black round piece that is on a white nylon piece of string.. nothing appears to have changed but it wont go back in!!

What on earth have I done?!

had a look through the owners manual and it appears that this a manual release for the storage compartment behind the back rests.. apparently

i thought it was the manual release for the roof if the lock fails

It is, missing from most facelift models. My last car built aug 6 didn't have it, the ///M built jan 06 has it though.

That's what it is  It's also a PITA when you want to move the bulkhead carpet as it gets in the way

What storage compartment behind the seat rests. Does the M have this. Never found such a thing. :?

Where your nav computer or CD changer (if you have one) is. Otherwise known as the cubby hole. I thought all Zeds had them :?

The important bit is spring loaded and should reset itself. Failing that, it will reset when the lock engages. About 2cm of travel is all that's involved. Any extra slack after that can be dealt with any way you see fit. Try to work it back behind the carpet just to get it out of the way.
