COP26

Like me, only day two of this conference and is anyone else sick and tired of there being nothing else on telly but COP26?

Even Joe Boden is falling asleep and he is there.

My wife is complaining climate change is a story line in Corrie. Is there no escape?

After two weeks of them talking bollox; unfortunately I fear the answer is going to be NO :|

Its on Crap enders as well - I just switch the lap top on its far more entertaining

Be glad when they all bugger off back where they came from - telling us to stop ABCD while flying in and driving around with motorcades - hypocrisy of the highest order, lest hope something comes of this lot

The One Show is being presented from Glasgow for the duration. Wonder how much the presenters and all the crew being up there is adding to the CO2 levels not to mention spending our license fee. The regular studio and a backdrop would have sufficed surely?

I’ve not heard it on Emmerdale. Yet!
It'll be coming - https://news.sky.com/story/hollyoaks-coronation-street-eastenders-and-emmerdale-among-soaps-taking-part-in-tv-first-crossover-episodes-to-highlight-climate-change-12432112

Whole thing is a joke, the only thing I am happy about is that the locals are charging the dickheads ££££s for renting their rooms and property

Big news about the agreement on coal power though... super good news.... except China, India and the US all didn't sign, they are the top 3 coal burners in the world accounting for 70.3% of the total coal burned in the whole world.... 70.3% ffs so its all but pointless. China alone in 2020 burned 4,319,921,826,000 mmcf of coal which is 50.5% of the world total.

Agree but since we are sitting on shed loads of fossil fuel I think we are missing a trick by totally banning its use (bear with me before thinking I am off my trolley).

The fossil fuel industry has trillions in bank accounts and massive R&D departments. Why not allow them to harvest the resources we have and burn as much as they want providing they can come up with the technology to do so without emitting any CO2 into the atmosphere. With that incentive I am sure they will not only come up with a solution but a solution they could then sell on to the rest of the world.

Why haven't they been able to do so yet I hear you ask. Well they won't invest in research knowing fossil fuels are being fazed out which will mean they go out of business. Why should we be taxed to clean up the planet when we can harness their resources to do it?

True though its also not restricted to companies, the UK for example, our debt is partially secured against the wealth of north sea oil, if we suddenly decided that we would no longer extract and sell it the UK balance of payments would tip significantly into the red (coincidentally a large part of the reason they didnt want YES in 2014 but thats a whole other topic).

The UK doesnt rely on coal fired power stations, my understanding was that some years ago they werent even being used to meet the energy needs and were to be completely phased out by 2025 though not sure if that is still on track.

I am no fan of nuclear, however if we truly want to ditch fossil fuels ASAP thats the only real reliable option

Sorry mate but that is misleading. I know you didn't publish it, only Googled it, but it makes no sense.
Coal can't be measured in mmcf (millions of cubic feet). Only liquids and gases can be measured in volumes. Coal should be measured in tonnes (or tons), i.e weight.
Not trying to defend China at all, but they have the world's best 'renewables' program.

As in everything they make breaks in a few weeks meaning it needs renewed?

I thought I’d seen or read somewhere that China had cancelled it’s coal fired generator building program.

I'm aware of what the measurement means and admittedly it did seem an unusual unit to use though admittedly I didnt have the time to check, Reuters gives a figure of 4.04 billion tonnes.

Its true that China has a massive renewable sector but that's not really relevant to the point I was making which, for clarity, was that this COP26 is arguably a colossal waste of time, money and, most offensively carbon emissions when they are hailing agreements that dont include the parties responsible for 70+% of the fossil fuel usage.

Agreed. These politicians and entourages of civil servants will, undoubtedly, make promises that they can't keep. It is down to industry to facilitate these (massive) promises, without their input into COP26. Politics and industry just don't really mix IMO.

I think they have just committed again to phase out all coal usage within the next couple of years. That despite having to very recently fire up a coal powered station to supply electricity to the grid because we had a sustained period where there was little or no wind and the sun don't shine much at this time of year.

I agree with the nuclear options. Rolls Royce I believe are designing small nuclear power stations that can be sited across the country at a much lower cost so could be one answer. Wind and solar just won't cut it. Ever. They can just about manage 50% now. Think about when all cars and transport is electric and heating is electric.
