cooling problem

Hi peeps i hope you can help? today my heaters went icy cold on my 3.0l smg roadster as if i had the A/C on, when i checked the expansion bottle i needed a top up i added water and after a while the heaters were still cold. i found the airlock screw but no water came out? could this be the thermostat?

Hmm it could be but I'm no expert. Suppose a few things to think of - does the water get up to normal operating temp eventually? Is the fan stuck on?

the water gets hot and i get pressure, the fan comes on and off like normal, i have checked to see if the floors are wet just in case it was the heater matrix its all fine, the only thing i am worried about is, the car stood outside while we had all the ice & snow, and i just hope the water pump is OK but it has anti freeze i found the bleed screw but after a while the water stopped coming out the top radiator pipe and the temp gauge stays at normal temp :headbang: last thing i need is to take it to the dealer

I noticed this happened in my car on the way to work this morning. Though there was some warm air coming from the vents. Did you find out what the problem was?

There are a few flaps in the air ventilation system. These are operated electronically. One set will shut off from external air intake (internal recirc), the other one/set will be a mix flap for the air going via the heater matrix.

It's probably just stuck on using fresh air or existing cabin air, rather than sending it via the heater matrix...

Hmmmm

This happens on mine occasionally for the flaps that control the path of the air flow. I have found that if I turn the fan to high and change the air flow setting between defroster, floor, and panel several times, the flap begins to function properly. I've had it in to the dealer and they have not been able to duplicate the problem. My concern is that once the car goes off warranty the controls/flap will stick permanently and I will have to pay for the repair.

I guess that was my problem, as all was well on the way home tonight :D

A top up with 'water' potentially dilutes the coolant mix and reduces its effectiveness. A wrong mix can potentially cause internal engine corrosion problems.

I had a my mechanic come out and have a look at it, when i was trying to fix it the water wasn't circulating from the expansion bottle. i let the car cool down and the air lock must have moved, i had to put 3lt of anti freeze in because i had diluted it to nothing, and topped up the water now it is mint.
I was told about the heater flaps sticking but i think it was an air lock.
Thanks for your posts peeps.
