Cooling issues on 2.2 - airlock?

I've had a cooling issue with my 2.2 2004 Z4. Can someone help me out with airlock bleeding instructions please?

Order of events...
Coolant level light came on
Topped up the coolant level
Was fine for a few weeks, until light came on again. Temp warning light also came on, luckily as I arrived home, and heater would not blow hot.

Checked level, and noticed that I hadn't put the cap on tightly enough previously and there were coolant/steam marks on the housing around the cap where coolant has been evaporating and leaking.

Topped up coolant again, level light off. took for a 15min drive and temp warning light came on. Heater still not blowing hot. Parked up and let it cool, and gave some of the top coolant pipes a squeeze to see if they were full or had bubbles.

Drove off later and temp rose and fell back to midpoint a few times quite rapidly. Heater now works again, but coolant level light is back on.

Now it has sat and cooled down for a while I'm going out to check levels and top up again.

Something that stuck me as odd was I couldn't hear the engine fan when the ignition was on and engine hot (but not running). I would have thought if the temp guage was over half way the fan would have kicked in?

What things should I be checking on this? How can I test the fan?

Thanks

If you are losing water it could be your expansion tank. They become brittle and develop hairline cracks that let water out when hot and under pressure. Difficult or impossible to see with naked eye. Loads on here have had issues and replaced expansion tank.
