Coolant top-up or change?

We just had the low coolant warning light come on, on our e89.

Normally I would just top up with the appropriate 50:50 mix, but as the car is now just over 5 years old I was considering getting the system flushed and refilled.

I couldn't see any specific guidance in the service schedule and it's not something that's been marked as having previously been done.

The consensus according to 'Google' is to change the coolant every 4-5 years.

Thoughts?

Normally with BMW its every 2 years however it seems to have changed as when i took the Zed in for its first Service at 2 years (2014) they just checked its strength and said if OK doesn't need changing.

Quite common now. Even my Aston is the same. They just checked the strength and said its fine. If its been run on the right mixture the systems cope pretty well. Might not hurt to flush it out after 5 years though and change it. I would.

Incorrect, there is no service schedule for coolant change. BMW dropped that some years ago (with newer models anyway)

I think using the service intervals as per my Z3 ie every 2 years for anti freeze and brake fluid is still a good rule of thumb wrong or not even for the latest models. Depends how long you intend keeping the car. Extended service intervals will be the death of cars if you follow BMWs service recommendations.

Should say the Aston is going and the Z4 is replacing it. Just found it easier to drive harder and having the Aston was a nightmare leaving it anywhere and don't even mention the running costs.

Wife was driving the Z4 so she is now in a Cooper S and she is happier as she only runs around in it and found the Z4 difficult to use round the shops and work (already on my fifth scratched alloy). Nightmare Parker!
