Following my previous post I have now got the new green O ring for the coolant sensor ( looking again closely the leak is definitely directly under the sensor ) . My question is how to get the sensor out - it's a bit of a squeeze to reach ( especially with my big mits ! ) Do you have to remove anything to get to it - I'm thinking radiator guard - hopefully not !

I removed radiator cover. It was very simple to remove, 2 screws and 8 rivets.

My car has sensor mounted near engine, later models they have moved it lower end of the hose nearer radiator.

Well bugger I ! Took me about an hour but job completed without taking anything off for access - used a bit of metal clothes hanger to use as a hook to get the metal clip thing off with a bit of old rag underneath to catch the bugger when it pinged off - which it did - sensor popped out and bit of a race to replace O ring as coolant pissed out - fortunately it slowed down quickly -just as well as it took a while fiddling around changing O ring and getting the bugger to pop back in - which it did 
electrical connection clicked back on - couldn't get the clip back on but in the end left that to do another day - connection really firm anyway so shouldn't cause a problem - topped up coolant - checked for leaks - none 
Must be cheapest BMW repair ie £2.30 for an O ring !

BMW part 13.62.1.743.299 had to order but only took a couple of days - bit of a fiddly job if like me you've got big hands which is why I improvised with the coat hanger to unhook the clip
for £2.30 well worth trying - cured my leak !
Whipped off the top cover over the radiator, pulled out the fan assembly and replaced the whole sensor with one from platinumcarparts (£3.75 delivered). Took about 30 mins - and no leaks! BMW quoted about £25 for the sensor but I can't see what there is that would cost anything like that amount in it's construction. Tomorrow I'll take the car out for a good run and when I get home will leave it running until the fan comes on - just to make sure all is working OK. I'll put a new O ring on the old sensor as a back-up for the future.
Only thing really is that o-ring.. and little coolant 50/50 mix. There was absolute no any problem with my sensor. You should block that hole with some rag or piece of sponge while you have sensor out and replace that o-ring, if not then coolant will pour out. Do coolant bleeding after replacing sensor o-ring.
