Coolant tank not sealing

I replaced my coolant tank and refilled the system, bled it ok and everything seemed fine but when I went to stick the under tray back on the tank was dripping coolant onto the ground. I traced the leak to the junction between the tank and the bottom bracket that holds the bleed screw and the level sensor. Do I have a knackered seal ? Is there a seal? I didn’t notice one on the tank (or the old one) but didn’t check the bottom bracket. It is a very small seep but enough to drip and lose coolant over time. How should the tank be sealed to the bottom bracket?

Should be two new seals that come pre installed
in the tank, should be quite difficult to connect the tank to the bracket without lubricating the o rings in the tank first,

Try pushing the locking clamp to the closed position if not already and then push the tank firmly onto the bracket till you hear it click, if you decide to remove the tank use silicone spray on the o ring to make installation easier and avoid damaging the o ring

I’ve had several issues like this recently

Cheap expansion tanks have a different profile on the smaller upper outlet which doesn’t seal properly- check that if able against the old one

The other one is that sometimes the o rings fail or seat poorly leading to a leak too- check each one

Cheers guys. Looks like I need to take it back out and reseat it. I thought I had it sealed properly and I used silicone spray on it. Guess I didn’t press it home properly. Good idea Joez4 to have the clip installed and press til it clicks. Tank is a Febi bigwin so should be ok. Will take it off and recheck everything. Thanks both.

My febi tank did seat on the bracket really well and never leaked, however it only lasted a year before it formed the same pin hole leak the original tank had,

In the end I went with a genuine bmw tank, expensive but it has already done more miles than the febi one managed.

Ahhh. Cheers !! :D

I dont do a lot of miles in it so will see how I get on with this one and go for a OEM next time.

Took the tank out again and discovered that it wasn’t seated tightly enough onto the bottom hose bracket. Stuck it all together again with the clips engaged this time so I could hear them click in place. Encouraged it into place with a rubber mallet and put it all back together. Bled fine and no leaks now. Thanks for the help guys.
