Coolant system issue(s) FIXED

( Typed up Saturday night but forgot to post )

After sorting out the many issues with my Z4 I was having a blast, told everyone and anyone about the drive on the 2.5si.

A friend of mine just brought one about a week ago, Lovely black 2.5i 2006 with 107k on the clock and hardtop.

Decided to go for a motorway cruise
(Saturday)Checked all fluids before hand. All was good. After around 15 miles. The friend notices the coolant light is on and pulls into the next services. No overheating, no leakes. Let her cool and inspect the coolant...it’s fine. Lost a little bit through trying to open whilst hot. Top up and carry on.

Back on our drive. I’m driving now, the coolant light didn’t come on after restarting. After like 30/45min of driving the light comes on again but goes off within a min. I notice heat coming from the engine bay into the cockpit ( is this normal?). Iv not noticed this heat in my own car..

Pop the hood, no sign of overheating but it did feel a bit hotter than it should. You could touch most parts without needing a skin graft. Though I wouldnt dare touch the exhaust manifold. The hottest part was the oil filter housing. The temp gauge was fine.

Found a local garrage and paid £20 for a palm reading, he got the following code after a long time searching. It’s related to waterpump in limp mode? Code 2e83. The actual water pump was working. As the mechanic had never worked on a Z4 before he wasn’t to sure of any faults.

The friend is distraught, thinks he’s been mugged off. Tried calling the previous owner. He’s taking the car to BMW on Monday morning

Presumably this is the N52 engine (facelift car)? Have a search on here re the electric water pump. They tend to need replacing ~80K miles else they will fail. If it's done 107K & not been replaced then get it done asap. I dont think the are too expensive to do.

Yes, change that water pump out and all will be well with the world. It's a VERY common failure point on the N52.

- UPDATE 1 -

Visited him again on Sunday, went through all paperwork and there was a receipt for Water pump and stat back in 2017. Service history was ok. 3 previous owners. Went for an hour long drive, no coolant light what so ever. I noticed the engine warms up very quick. Within 2-3min it’s at optimum temp.

Tried googling that particular code with 0 luck. Seems rather rare.

Could it simply be a fuse or battery/alternator?

Update 2: Have been informed that the car is now fixed. Friend took the car to BMW and forked out £300 in total for parts and labour. OUCH!

Problem: wiring issues. Engine bay must have been jetwashed and dislodged and damaged several electrical components.

I’m passing on info from a friend who just about knows where to put washer fluid. Getting proper info by phone is very basic at best.

BMW Rep explained he had a ton of corrosion under the bonnet, earthing issues. Mentioned possible air in system as well. Rep was more focused on the shocks/handbrake and exhaust. Quoted him £2000 plus for future work. Turned out Water pump and stat was purchased through BMW in the past. They had it on their system and where confident it was working fine but lacked power. Plus he had already purchased a battery From BMW on his very fist visit the day before.

Actual work carried out, NEW battery terminals or wiring. replaced a few wires here and there under the hood and Smacked him with £300. I don’t even think the battery was part of the £300. plus another £140 for labour.

I’m geussing all he really needed was a new battery and a possible bleed cycle on his water pump. THIS IS WHY I DISLIKE VISITING MAIN DEALERS
