Coolant replacement in the ///M

Murketts in Huntingdon? That's a long way to go for a service...

Just highlights the total lack of trust I have in any of the local dealers :fuelfire: Plus they're a long way cheaper than anyone else even when you consider the fuel it'll take getting there. I'll be dropping the car on a Wednesday and getting a courtesy car until the Saturday when I pick it up. They're looking at some warranty issues I have too plus I'll be having a scout around Cambridge on Wednesday so it isn't all bad.

Sounds good but im pretty sure coolant change is just that though- flush the system and fill up. No parts required!

I've just emailed the fella I spoke to, he was totally genuine (master tech, too) so I'm going to go by what he said for now. I'll get back once he has clarified the procedure

Glad that you went with my recommendation for Murketts  Hope that you will be as pleased with them as I was when they did warranty work on my car...

When I was one the blower to them yesterday they said they've had a few Z4Ms in now, they had one there that sounded like Rich's one (flatout membername on here) in at the moment too. Cheers for the headsup!

Had a discussion and BMW's since sept 2003 have lifetime coolant fitted. They were going to change mine for free when I queried why I had not had it changed in the last four years. My e46 m3 was every two years.

They checked the fluid and showed me an odd microscope type thing that showed -41 degrees, the coolant was fine according to them and therefore never got changed on goodwill.

Hope that clears things up, that's why it is no longer listed as a service item, odd that BMW decided to do away with something they could make money out of!!!

So the s54 in your M3 needed it every two years but the s54 in the Z4M doesn't? Also, it doesn't exactly prove definitive if the dealer says it's unnecessary when it was only a potential goodwill claim. They could have just been weaseling out? As they're known to do on occasion

If it isn't mentioned in the service schedule then it's pretty likely that it is a lifetime coolant and not required for change regardless of what some dealers are saying. I'll leave mine until Insp 2 and see what dealer says. Another three years away!

I don't know how they can say it's a sealed system when quite clearly it has a reserve tank that does occassionally need a top up.
As far as I know there's only one option for coolant also if you buy some, it's just a standard all-BMW model coolant I think but correct me if I'm wrong.
Have always been told that the coolant will lose it's protective properties. It's not just a coolant and anti-freeze but it also has anti-corrosion properties too and it's this that loses it's effectiveness over time apparently.

As the S54 engine is not exactly a modern engine (ie,not magnesium or all aluminium) I will replace the coolant every four years which is the normal for the type of engine it is (alu head, different block). Will check the owner manual later to see if anything in there about it, if not then will definatel do every 4 years

I've always thought coolant needed replacing after certain time/mileage and I agree the S54 engine is 'long in the tooth' so it's quite strange that BMW feel confident enough to leave out coolant replacement from the servicing schedule. Would be interesting to know exactly why.

The coolant is the part that's improved, nothing to do with the engine. It's not in the service schedule, they test it with the odd device I mentioned.
