Coolant replacement in the ///M

Guys........Unless I've missed it breezing through the manuals?

In my previous 330i and zed 2.5, I clearly recall seeing that the coolant needed changing every 4 years. (I believe it was near the info that the brake fluid needs changing every 2 years).

However, looking through the ///M literature I can see the brake fluid info but no mention of the coolant!

I presume it still needs doing?

Cheers

I would change the coolant regardless dude. After a period of time and heat cycles the water in your system will become acidic.Deffo worth changing every 4 years with distilled water

my cars due its next service next year, i believe insp 1, i was going to ask simpson to flush the coolant and refill with fresh bmw stuff, i still plan to get this done.

Should be done every four years I believe. It's one of those maintenance tasks often forgotton about. For whatever reason the dealers never usually remind you of it at service time, never have done with any previous BMW's I've owned.

BUMP...

All the Z4MR & Z4MC on 06 or 56 plates.

Did you get your coolant changed at 4 years?

If yes, was it main dealer & how much did you pay?

Cheers

Just received a reminder from my dealer that is due soon. Probably just going to use an independent as it can't be worth BMW prices for a coolant change?

For those approaching the 4 year mark i Had some quotes in...park lane BMW = £234.

K&M auto techniks = 45+ vat.
Birds £77

Hmmm. Not sure main dealer are too competitive on this one!

Both the above garages are near iver, not had a chance to do it yet but k&m prices are too good to ignore :)

inspec 1 at four years, no mention of coolant.

not that they checked the M mobility kit either, went out of date in March 2010. what would you expect for £700!!!

Snows portsmouth by the way, service desk called to check that I was happy with everything - when I explained NOT they said they would get the 'NEW' service manager to call, that was 3 weeks ago.

Ho hum!!!

I used west4autos for this in the end for £60 plus vat seemed reasonable. Everyone I asked said it's no big deal if you don't change the coolant immediately on these cars so unless the car has frozen I wouldn't be too concerned if it's a bit late...

Talking to the dealer today when picking up the 3 series after a bit of warranty work and I asked about coolant change for the Z4M. After some discussion in the back they informed me it was a 'sealed system' and did not normally require replacement. :o

This can't be right?

This I how I read it to, and posted the same. The service book makes no reference to coolant changes like it did for my e46's

I tried to book mine in for one when I was getting my brake fluid change done, and they said it needn't be done any more regularly than every 6 years - and it's not like a dealer to turn away easy money.

Yep, a dealer refusing work, seens very odd :) You'd think it would at least be mileage or time related, 6 years or 45k miles maybe. In which case it would be Inspection 2 requirement.

Weird that BMW sent me a reminder @ 4 years old when you have been told differently...can't hurt to change it in my view?

It was the reminder that prompted me to ask too, but as I'd had a new engine (and coolant of course) less than 18 months previous, I wanted to ask them what interval I should follow, and they said that they don't have a required coolant change in the service schedule for the ///M.

I'm guessing the 'reminder' is just a dealer looking for work - mine came from one I don't think I've ever used.

I priced it up at BMW in Birmingham (now Sytner, but was something else) and I'm sure they said £120.

I'm getting mine done by Murketts along with an Ins II next month. I was told that it isn't just a case of changing fluid as there are parts that need changing too. The quote was £170 but that may have been slightly cheaper than usual taking into account I'm also paying £835 for the Ins II. All told though I was seriously impressed with Murketts. It is so refreshing to actually talk to someone at BMW who appears to be grateful for your business and knowledgable and talkative on the phone instead of the usual grunting followed by an extortionate quote. They care for over 40+ CSLs so I say if it's good enough for them... (obviously not had anything done as yet)
