Coolant question, please

Hi everyone
I have a coolant question, please
When I look in the reservoir with a torch, I can’t see any coolant but the little float bobs up and down when I push it I would like to top this up. Is there a particular coolant I need to get and does it matter what type is already in the system?
Thank you for any advice as always.
It is a 2014 2.0 auto

G48

50/50 mix

G48 should be in there

As long as it’s G48 and correct ratio then it doesn’t matter whose…dilute concentrate with deionised water

Lovely, Thank you B21
Could there be an issue with the float ? Should it be filled up to the top ? It’s strange because you can’t see through the side of the reservoir
Cheers

The float should sit with its stick well out of the filler WHEN COLD….best technique is to add a little coolant at a time..depressing the stick into the chamber and allow it to bob up…when you are close to max you’ll hear the float tap the inside edge of the container..DO NOT OVERFILL..

The float/stick can get a bit 'stuck' sometimes IME. I find giving it a good wiggle around (gently) will free it up.
There is a diagram of where the float stick should be at max and min level. It's either on the outside of the reservoir bottle, or inside the cap (I can't remember which).
As said, just make sure the system is stone cold before doing anything.

Hi everyone I have a question related to this please I have topped up the coolant. It was quite low hoping that it may help my issue with the oil temp which is my car gets up to heat and is stable and all is fine but as soon as I turn the heating on The temperature starts to drop I was thinking about purging the coolant system. I have read that if you turn on the ignition then ramp up the heater and depress the Excelerator pedal for 10 seconds the process will start. Do you know if this also applies to The E 89? I want to do this just to check Before I get the thermostat looked at ,thank you for any advice. Really appreciate it.

What are you oil temperatures? Cold heater temperature would point to an air lock, more likely the thermostat. IMHO

Hi chippie , if I start the car with the heater on the needle doesn’t seem to move at all but as soon as I turn the dial to cold it starts to rise and sits nicely at 90/100 and does not budge until I raise the temp even by one notch then it starts to drop again ? Thanks for the help on this

Do the proc you stated.
Go to the expansion tank, small pipe with screw, unscrew that a few turns and with pump running make sure water flows even into res.
If there is air you will see it run out uneven. Just repeat throttle proc. till it flows smooth.

Thank you , will do and fingers crossed, hope it solves the issue as Iv not been using my heating just having the seats turned up max sweating back with freezing hands , really appreciate the advice

Flybobbie should I undo the screw during the pump purge and with the reservoir open or is this to be done separately please ?

dont mess around with hoses etc just use the cars inbuilt water pump prining process, really simple, applies to all of the earlier external electric water pump models.
Just make sure your battery is good, it takes around ten min.

Didn’t work unfortunately, do you guys think it’s something I need to get looked at soon? The engine heats up fine and is stable, the heater/aircon works great it’s just the reading on the gage , do you think that once upto temp and I put the heater on that the engine is still upto temp even if the gage goes down would the temp drop so quickly as reflected on the oil temp gage ?Sorry for all the (probably stupid) questions

Yes next to res. open the black screw about size of a UK penny. Also open the res. cap so you can look in.
Highest point in the system. It's easy to see the smooth flow when all the air is out.
Will be changing my cars coolant shortly.

I can't see oil temp. should change with heater on.
Never seen that on my car.
Not really taking heat out of oil.
