Coolant level

Carol M

Lifer
Just been out to check on the coolant following the repairs my Freelander had last week knowing it would probably need a top up after it had settled and I've just had to put about three quarters of a litre in to top up to max.
Is that about the right amount to expect for it to have settled by or is that a bit much?

Depends on the system Carol, there could have been large amounts of air trapped if its been emptied and refilled. The key thing to do is keep an eye on it, if it keeps falling then you've got a leak somewhere, if not, it was just due to the settling/air pockets.

Yeah, that's what I thought would happen. They said they bled it but I wondered if that amount of top up was more than I should expect after it had settled.
When I'm feeling flush (its petrol haha!) I'll take it for a big run and see how it settles again.
Thanks :D

Common things to look out for are water/leaks under the car when running or stationary, and steam from the exhaust continuously. Its normal for some steam at startup, but if the engine is up to temp and its still steaming then you've a leak inside the engine somewhere, gasket/block etc. Otherwise leaks anywhere else will usually leave a nice patch on the floor to give you a clue.

Yep, that's what happened last week. There's no leaks. I've been checking since I had it back.
I'm quite good with car 'stuff'. My Dad was a mechanic and I used to stalk him when he was in the garage fixing cars!
Even if it wasn't for my Dad I would've made sure I knew most basic stuff when I passed my test. Stupid to own a car and not know at least basic stuff.
I made sure when my lads passed their test they could do basic maintenance.

3/4 litre. They didn't bleed it properly or they haven't fixed it properly.

If a mechanic told me settling was necessary, it would be the last work he did for me.
