coolant level??

hey peeps, just been doing my usual mid evening mess around in the garage, just wondering if you guys take off the coolant cap off does the little red float rise up or stay low? cheers guys.

Why I ask is because according to the diagram it should extend right up but mine doesn't seem to extend as far as the little diagram suggests, if I gently lift the float it stops only maybe 1cm above were it is now, but according to the diagram it should rise right up?

Your a star, it's probably normal, I'm really fishing for some warranty work, lol.
 i know the feeling, mine runs out tomorrow - managed to get a complete exhaust manifold under warranty a few weeks back as the sensor had broken loose leaving the car sounding like a diesel truck. BMW picked the car from home, gave us a 2010 325d estate whilst it was repaired - hows that for good service  That's why I plan on renewing mine.

Not sure if anyone knows, but the z4M shares the same manifold as the CSL - looked underneath the car a few days back and saw the writing "CSL" on the manifold (will upload pic) - not sure why but it put a nice smile on my face :)

PS - hope you fix the coolant issue

flatout yes i knew the z4m uses the same manifold as the CSL, but ive never seen the writing on it, please post that one up!!! only the euro z4m uses these manifolds, the us z4m uses a very restrictive unit with extra cats built in! so we do get some perks over the pond!!
i thought my expansion bottle was knackered but unfortunatly i dont think it is, i will add a small amount to get the float to get to its highes mark but its alittle anal of me!!

flatout any other warranty work in the works for you??

Here it is ...

pvr mine is exactly the same! according to the little diagram the red float should be sticking right out the bottle, lol. ow well i went and brought some coolant from bmw this morning, ill stick a tiny amount in to see if i can get to the max mark, why o why didnt bmw use a clear container with a simple max and min mark! lol

cheers for that pvr, thats identical to mine. was hoping for a new engine under warranty, lol!!

btw bmw have an offer on the coolant atm, its only 5 quid for a 1.5 litre bmw oem stuff, quite good i thought. always handy to have some in the garage!!

Yes - I have a bottle for that. The X5 needed about half a litre after 3.5 years.

When putting the lid back on the M, the floater had to be pushed down a bit, so that is what I think is roughly the measuring level.

ok i get you, once the lids on it kinda acts like a dip stick, so we'd want a water mark just under the top bobble on the red float thingy, ill add alittle bit and see if i can get it just under that bobble, With the high temps this engine emits i really want it perfect.

pvr wheres your water mark on the red floaty thingy?

NOOOOO! dont add too much- the float is at its max when sitting at the top (floating) not filed with water.

i know paddy, cheers for headsup, its all fine!!!! strange system though. id love an alloy expansion tank with glass sight eye!! That would look the nuts!!

In the photo should the top of the float be level with the outer top, or the inner lip?

Thanks.
