Coolant leak...

Hi all,

Looking for some known or common coolant leak experiences.

I've had to top up the coolant level 2 times in about 8 weeks on my 2003 3.0 Zed (almost a litre this morning). I'm also seeing a discouloured patch of tarmac near the front nearside wheel at time on my backwards sloping drive... two plus two says patch and coolant warning light means loss of coolant onto my drive!

Any known history of problems, or any diy investigation I can do?

Thanks.

Search the board here and you will find many posts on this subject.

That being said, you are going to have to do a hand over hand of the cooling components to see which one is the culprit.

If you have ruled out a cracked expansion tank (normally a large loss of coolant), weeping water pump and a leaking radiator (doubtful on that one), then the most likely solution is the O-rings in one of your hoses is worn.

On my 03, it was the lower hose. I replaced the hose (did not know you could get metric O-rings) and that fixed the issue.

sounds like cracked expansion tank. depends on where the crack is... I had the crack near the top so it only leaked while driving and took a few weeks to leak enough to ask for a top up. Could also be leaking from the t-stat.

I had the same experience. The expnasion tank was cracked about half way down. If I filled the tank to the correct level I would find leakage on the ground. If I left it low in level I had no leakage. It threw me for awhile but finally decided to replace the tank and I found the crack.

Faulty thermostat on mine- BMW Warrenty covered it- best get it looked at professionally as there are many causes!

Thanks all, it was a split expansion tank. £175 to fit a replacement. (£75 + VAT for the tank) and the rest labour.
