Coolant leak - could this be the cause?

Trying to locate my coolant leak without a ramp at the minute. Have got my iPhone to the bottom of the coolant tank (tank was my first guess, and could still be the culprit) and noticed the water hose is missing the metal retaining clip. Anyone know if this clips is vital in securing this hose and could my fix be that simple?

 
Isn't that the metal clip going over the top. Wouldn't think it would stay connected without it once the system gets up to temp/pressure.
 
Agree re SR - if a clip was missing the hose would have long since blown off under pressure.
Assuming no water in oil, etc. and just the usual slow loss with no visible drips, then 99% it's a cracked expansion tank.
 
Replace expansion tank is the common problem for leaks like this. Check and replace o rings on pipes if possible.
