Coolant Issues HELP PLEASE

This past week the coolant light comes on briefly on start up and then goes off after 5 minutes. I've checked the level and you can't see any coolant?! However, the car temperature is perfectly on half way when hot?

I must have some in there as the engine isn't over-heating!!

Anyway, is it normal to not see any coolant? I'm thinking of just getting any old coolant to see if the problem is more sinister and the coolant disappears. I've seen that only BMW coolant should be used. Good idea or not advised, surely any coolant is better than none?

Is the red plastic float level indicator in the right place when cold?

Oh, not sure tbh? I opened the filler cap and looked inside but couldn't see any fluid? As you can tell I'm not overly familiar with this!

Crack in plastic filler tank??. I understand that can be a problem particularly in this bitterly cold weather if car is left outside at night and coolant mix is not at correct strength

Just drove 10 miles home, light came on at start up but then went out as engine warmed and temperature stuck at half way as normal?

Yup I had this a couple of months ago. Popped into the local stealer and bought a bottle of BMW recommended coolant for about £12 if I remember. Topped it up using the float as a guide. No problem since.
