Coolant Issue

Just to confirm this is the process he should follow:

Do not open the sealing cap of the coolant expansion tank during the bleeding procedure.

Switch on the low-beam headlights to perform the bleeding procedure. If the low-beam headlights are not switched on, the ignition (Terminal 15) will switch off automatically after a certain period of time and interrupt the bleeding procedure.

Connect battery charger.
Switch the ignition on.
Switch on low-beam headlight.
Set heating to maximum temperature. Set fan speed to lowest setting
Press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds to floor. Engine must not be started.
The bleeding procedure was started by pressing the accelerator pedal and takes approx. 12 min. (the electrical coolant pump was activated and switches off automatically after approx. 12 min).
Then adjust filling level in coolant expansion tank to maximum.
Check cooling system for leaks.
If the cooling system bleeding has to be performed again, deactivate DME completely (remove ignition key for approx. 3 minutes). Then repeat procedure.

Yes, but it needs to have been filled properly too (the "only when venting" extract I posted).

I would expect a garage to have a vacuum filler to speed this up.
But it is certainly possible to do it without one.
 
Hopefully it is due to the air in the system, but the cooling fan constantly running is often the first sign that the pump is on its way out.
Get the mechanic to code read the engine control system and look for pump codes.
 
Mechanic’s saying he cant get the electric pump to start the bleeding process. Is this definitely n52? LH52001

In the past I’ve had issues with procedures NOT starting when hooked up to a power source

May be worth doing it on vehicle power only
 
Cheers for the advice, tried with power source connected and without unfortunately no luck. Mechanics said to give him a couple hours. I’m stuck not knowing what to do as he’s currently doing all this for free as I paid for expansion tank replacement. Worried if I take it to a bmw specialist garage I will run up a huge bill and be in no better position 😩
 
Yeah he checked and fuses all good. Got a second opinion and the mechanic said I can manually bleed it by pouring water into expansion tank until it streams out of bleed cap. Screwing both back on then starting the engine. Putting temp to max and fan on then letting it sit for 15 mins. If not hot air then repeating the process. I’ve decided to take it home and try this myself. If no luck after a couple days ill take it to a different garage. Any insight into this plan? Cheers
 
Just read someone of this forum say

“It's a slow, painful job and you need over 10l of coolant to do it. Also, do not bleed it with the engine running, just on Ignition II with heaters on full, lowest fan.”

Should I not be turning the engine on afterwards and does it matter that i’m using water?

That'[s how you are meant to fill it in the first place. Then run the pump.

Have you tried running the pump self bleed mode yourself? If you take the cap off the expansion tank you'll see and hear it if it is running.

Even with a vac fill you need to bleed it. If it was possible by just running the engine BMW would just say to do that (like my F10 with B47, run it, rev it etc.).

Update: I took the car from the mechanic and spent time trying to bleed it. Frustrated I used my scanner and to my surprise four errors show relating to the electric coolant pump. I had specifically asked the mechanic to check for this and he assured me it was fine. Now i’m thinking to book with a more reliable mechanic, buy a new electric pump and get him to fit it. The pump going would also explain why when doing 70mph the coolant tank broke and coolant shot everywhere.
Any further support or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah I’d say find another mechanic to fit a new pump unless you are confident to do the spannering yourself

Exactly that mate, I literally showed your comment to the mechanic and handed him my obs scanner. He said he already had one and that there were no codes. So annoying! Here was me trying to bleed it for 10hrs 😩
