Coolant Flush

So I've heard its a bit of a pain... but I don't trust a garage to flush it through properly, want to get someone from clickMechanic to do it at my house that way I know. but questions...

What coolant do I buy? I've heard to only use bmw stuff but not sure where is best to buy it.

And, how much coolant do I need? Also going to buy a s-tonne of distilled water but need to know how much for the flush and refill.

I had a look at Evans a while ago and really liked the idea until I did some wider research. Basically Evans waterless drastically reduces working pressures (and stress) in the system and successfully prevents corrosion in iron blocks, so seems suitable for older engines that were prone to leaking and boiling over. But it actually promoted deposits in Aluminium engines and cooled less efficiently raising cylinder head temperatures, which in turn leads to earlier detonation (knock), causing ignition to retard, reducing engine power. So is not necessarily a great idea in our engines.

Good post, so easy to believe the BS so many manufacturers publish in there advertising. BMW make and research the engine, its performance and optimal fluids. I don't feel comfortable with the 'life long' promise with lubricants but coolant is basically just water and anti-freeze.
No need to over complicate and overspend..

Yes I was surprised when I asked my indi to flush and replace the coolant, he checked the composition and said it was clear with no sign of contamination and spot-on with the antifreeze content. He could have pulled my pants down and charged for a job that didn't need doing.

Antifreeze testers are quite cheap if you feel the need to monitor it regularly

I did mine at 4 years old, as the fluid showed a -10° protection, once done by the dealer it showed - 30°. When you consider the actual cost to do spread over 4 years life it's not a lot! Particularly in a car that's known for high operating temperatures. As a side issue everytime you defrost your fridge or freezer the water is distilled, so save it if you want. Good luck.

I was always taught that, even if the coolant showed as being effective at low temperatures when you tested it, you had no way of knowing whether it's anti-corrosive properties were still effective.
On that assumption, I would lean towards regular changes anyway; especially for garaged summer cars. It would be folly to assume that as you never went out in icy conditions you didn't need the anti-freeze.

top tip about the ice, i thought "that's a good idea I will save it next time" then I realised I just bought a frost free freezer BOLLOX...
