Converting a Z4M to an automatic ????? Blasphemy !

Don't forget to Geert is a HTG dealer, and supplies wiring services for HTG users, so has a vested interest ;)

Ok I will bare that in mind . I really don`t want this to turn into a " mud throwing " thread but if we could sort out a way for it to work wouldn`t that be great for us and anyone else that would like to do the same  When I say we I mean anyone that has the technical knowledge because I definitely cant help there

Lol, no worries.

If you want something that works out of the box, is tried and tested and is suitable for a daily driver then the MaxxECU route, with an S54 loom is the way forward.

Thanks Martyn it would seem the logical way to use the S54 loom but as I say my technical skills especially electronics are almost zero .

Do you know Geert? Or contacted him?
I check his FB and saw that an "expert" stopped by to fixed the software.
The MaxxECU is "the" solution between a S54 and DCT from the M3/M4?

Btw im the only one that is wondering when de ZF gearbox from the new G80 wil hooked up? Buttersmooth shifting, not as race but good ;).

I don't know him personally.

MaxxECU with the 135i / 335i / Z4 35i E series DCT gearbox is the way forward. F series gearbox support is still in development with MaxxECU.

If you want to use the 8HP ZF boxes then TurboLamik is the way forward, lots of HTG users have switch to the TurboLamik setup and are VERY happy.

Bumping an old thread as I found this earlier - https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/e46-f30_330d-zf-8hp70z-gearbox-conversion-project.1294967/

ZF 8HP70z automatic transmission swap onto an M54. Seems like it could be a good option :)

Size-wise, would it fit straight in, or would there need to be some modifications to the transmission tunnel?

...and why an 8HP70 rather than a 8HP45 (what I have in my 320D) or 8HP50 (in the Zupra)?

Thank you  I have had a read through and it would seem that other people are looking into other options also . I have filed it in my to do folder :)

He briefly refers to the 8HP45 on the second page as someone asked the same question .

Is there not an 8HP with the same bellhousing as the DCT or did you go for what was available?
The 8HP45, but it is not fully supported by the tuner. It will be supported I believe within 2022 but I preferred a proven solution now, which is the 8HP70. I'd rather modify it to physically fit and not to worry about tuning instead of the opposite. I am not doing the same mistake again - especially with tuning.

Also, George Hill (Hill Performance Bimmers), Austin TX is working on the above (8HP45/70 + Turbolamik TCU) if you're looking for a more localized support. Iniciar sesión en Facebook

It looks to fit really easily on the E46, so shouldn't be an issue for the E85/6 either.

Choice of gearbox basically comes down to picking the one that has the best aftermarket support

Why not just buy a non M Z4 which is an auto or just get a different auto roadster or convertible?

M4, M6, SLK, SLC, E Class, etc. SLK 55AMG might come with an auto. Seems like a lot of work and money for something which you then won't be able to sell later on down the road as it would need someone familiar with it's history.

Nobody modifies their car expecting to get their money back.

You do a project like this because you want to. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone other than the person doing it :)

Am I missing something, why can't you just use the auto box from an auto Z4 or is the reason it's not strong enough?

Then he should just go and get it done then. Personally I think it makes zero sense. I have an automatic Z4 and much prefer auto now. But I wouldn't buy a manual car then try and convert one ever I'd buy it as auto to begin with.

Most people spend money for more performance not £7k to convert a manual to auto. This isn't a normal project and there's a reason why it's extremely rare. It doesn't make any sense and even less so if money is an issue

Give me the money and I will .

Precisely which is why I said if I was ever in the position I could afford to do it .

I was watching a you tube about a Mercedes estate which cost about £100,000 plus brand new and the owner had a Brabus upgrade that cost £90,000 so a total of £190,000 . I think the owner had done about 10,000 miles in it and was selling it for about £130,000 so a loss of about £60,000 in a short period of time . That doesn`t make any sense but it`s their money so why not .

I would like to drive a Z4M but I cant because they are all manuals but if I won the lottery I would buy one and put in an auto box to please myself . Why not ?

We are all different and that is what makes the world go round . Mind you look at the state of that :)

People that spend £200k on a car don't really care about losing £60k. That makes sense to me. They have plenty of money and they can do what they want with it.

You have made it clear this isn't easily affordable for you. So why not just get a auto roadster or auto convertible if that is what you are after?

An old M6 would be great and similar in price to a Z4M

Because it isn't a Z4M.....it's that simple.

Personally I'd keep looking into this, making sense isn't always the issue imho....once you're dead you're dead...making sense out of every situation is only going to lead one into a dull and miserable life. Good luck to you. :driving:
