Hi everyone. I am pretty mechanically inclined, and with the help from other members who document procedures I have done a lot on the 5 series and my Z4. (Thanks Shipkiller)
This one has me stumped: I replaced my waterlogged convertible top motor and it's not working so I'm pulling it off again.
The previous owner said the top motor had been replaced. However the first nice day this year it did not work. Typical symptoms; windows go down, latches open but no motor sound.
Sure enough, after removal the insulation was waterlogged. On inspection I saw the hydraulic lines reversed and the electric wires reversed on the motor I pulled out (as compared to the color coded wires that came with the motor). So wanting things to be correct, I installed the hydraulic lines to match that stamped on the motor and plugged the wires in to match the new motor wire colors. Seems logical; opposite polarity and opposite hydraulics from what was in there previously.
I was not impressed with the previous repair also because the motor housing was not attached to the frame (just laying lose in the well) and the Bowden cable did not operate.
Before installation of the top with new motor, I verified the Bowden cable worked (sure would have come in handy earlier) and during installation I used the Bowden cable to test open/close the top before I applied power. It went down one time and now won't bypass to close the top. I wanted to verify correct electrical operation so I tripped the rear shelf interlock since the self wasn't installed yet.
It doesn't operate the top.
With the rear shelf interlock closed, I hear the relay under the dash click when the open button is pressed. I also hear a relay under the dash when the close button is pressed. However the latches operate backwards (latch closes when I press the open button and vice versa). There is no motor sound.
I am pulling it out again to verify operation and that the Bowden cable is adjusted correctly.
Can someone tell me what the correct color wires at the motor are supposed to be connected to (which one is supposed to be blue and which one green). And what polarity on those wires makes it open and shut? And is there maybe some reason that the hydraulics and motor wires were crossed and that is preventing operation (like maybe the controller thinks it is out of position or at its limit already?)
Thank you. With out a great community of other owners, I don't think I would be able to keep this car.
