Convertible ownership issues.

Just to lighten the mood and I suppose it is Z4 ish related but couldn't think where else to pose the question.
The Z4 is my first journey into the world of convertible/roadster ownership and now I've actually been out in it with the roof down I discovered a couple of side effects I hadn't considered and wonder if there are more to follow?
Having the roof down on a sunny day can cause sunburn! :D
Really never gave it any thought before but now, oww. Burnt tshirt arms and top of my head
So what do you veterans of ownership do? Wear hats and long sleeves or go for the sun tan lotion.
All done in a socially distancing and essential journey of course.
Oh yeah, do everybody think that you want to race them all the time too?
Loving the car though.
My wife feels socially embarrassed with the roof down, thinks everyone is looking and thinking 'look at those old saddos'

Rule one of convertible ownership - invest in a head covering of some sort and leave it in the car. Sounds obvious but you'd be surprised how many times you'll wear it back in the house and leave it there when you go out next! I'm in my mid 50's now and the only time the wife thinks a baseball cap is suitable for a gentleman my age is in the Zed - helps keep the sun out of my eyes as well as protecting the bonce. Loose fitting caps/hats are liable to fly off if you're cracking on, even with the wind deflector fitted. Sun cream on any parts that don't get much exposure to the sun is a good idea, especially your neck, ears and nose.
The only time I've had the roof up on a convertible was in Cyprus heat of 40c and it was better to cover up and get the aircon on.
EVERY other time I'm in one the roof's down if it's not peeing down.

Much worse in sunnier climes! But yes a hat becomes a necessity especially if you are receding in any way! Takes a while to feel comfortable with the roof down.. especially with music too!

Enjoy!

When out in the sun shine wear sunscreen. It really is that simple. :D

If the temperature is below Zero, wear a hat and gloves. Just so you know.

But always, always put the roof down. :driving:

When I had the E89 and he Z3 I always found it pretty uncomfortable having the roof down on baking hot day, never quite saw the appeal of feeling baking hot frying up in traffic jams and the like so most times the roof was up with the aircon on :o

Most pleasant time for me was early morning summers day or late evening with a cool breeze, mid-day sun, no thanks, mad dogs and Englishmen and all that.

Do I miss convertable motoring, nope, I just stick my head out the sun roof now :)

Tim.

Haha, it should be a warning in the owners manual "Wear suntan lotion when it's sunny" :)

Having only owned my Z4 for a week I too am realising that a cap with a peak is essential to keep the sun out of my eyes. Find myself ducking down and using the roofline to block the sun out. Not ideal. Cap is essential equipment to keep in the car.

Sums up convertible ownership perfectly 👍

+1 :driving:

You get used to not bothering about what people think when the roof is down after a while. Who cares what everyone else thinks, you are having more fun than them :D

My car makes me 17.5% better looking too. I’ve never asked anyone, but I’ve seen the photos. This is not really an issue for me, more for everyone else :P

After 30 years of driving open top sports cars I'm way past worrying about people looking at me. Nothing much to see anyway! :) Being follically challenged since my early twenties a cap is essential. As I look a complete prat in a baseball cap my current choice is a traditional cap from Stetson. It's linen and cool to wear.

As above its all about protection I carry a can of dry oil in aerosol form so I can just spray my head neck ears and arms then jump back in the car as it dries really quickly :D

Re self conscious about top down i was concerned about owning a roadster I more than likely would have bought a Coupe but back in 2008 they were out of my price range I remember the first time i dropped the top i waited till i was out of town on more quiet roads  but 12 years later i don't even think about it

I have had six convertible cars over the years and I don’t think I would ever buy another one. Maybe it’s my age or That I just hate being in the direct sun light without being sat in a pool and a beer to hand!

I always wear a baseball cap in my ROADSTER, lack of a mop in the sun is not fun. Plus, as above, it keeps the sun off your face. Looking forward to taxing it in a few days

17.5%, are you sure :?

I love dropping the roof when I can. What a sound!

Keep a hat behind the seats. Mine stay in there all year.

I've had coupes but always fancied a roadster so, here we are.
Love the sound of the 6 just a bit quiet, not changing that though, got the bikes if I want loud.

Nice Blade - last of the carb'd models?

Yep.
As you can see, it's a real pussy magnet :D
Of all the bikes there it sat on mine, must have known I don't like cats.
