Convertible or not?

I have a question that some might think is dumb. Please excuse: My car's convertible top connects and disconnects at the push of a button. But that's all that happens. When I bought the car I was shown how to manually open and close the top the rest of the way. Everything I see indicates that I should have a hydraulic top.
The release device to set it on manual is in the trunk, set on manual (nothing happens when I flip it the other way)
I can't tell by looking at owner's manual
I would like to know before I remove the top to check.
How can I verify this or should I just take it somewhere ?

:?

Can you hear the motor run at all? If not, the motor will probably look like it’s spent 10 years at the bottom of the sea and will need refurbing and relocating to the boot. Members on here can do it for you for typ <£100

Sounds like you bought a car with a dead roof motor. That is a common issue. Let folk know where you are and hopefully you can get in touch with a local member who can confirm the problem and sort it out for you for a few hundred quid. :)

What does the button look like?

Thanks, I'm sending a pic, I appreciate your help, hope there's someone around who knows. There's a black z4 down the street but we haven't talked yet. Guess I better get to it.

That looks to me like you have an electrical/hydraulic roof. IIRC I'm pretty sure all UK models did.

The forum members who can probably revive your roof motor and relocate it out of harm's way into the boot are based in Durham, Widnes area, Bristol area and Hampshire, so if you give an indication of where you are based I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all the input, first of all i'm in the US in Louisville, KY. Secondly, there are no motor sounds nor can I move the top around enough to see if there is a motor down under. I will endeavor to find a local Z4 owner who has been through this.
Thanks for all your responses,
Ron

I think some US cars were supplied with a manual roof as opposed to the more usual powered ones? :?

I think all the cars with the roof button have an electric motor. At least all the ones I've seen did. I haven't seen the manual version ... unless they were broken. Lots of youtube videos on Z4 roofs show where the motor is located so locating the motor and verifying the wires are intact might be a first step then locating the fuse... and then seeing if it is getting power when the button is pressed might help you determine if the motor is good...like that
