Back in the day there was and still is debate over which is better, the simple fact is that you can have the top up or down in an e85 and you can’t in the other. There are only two advantages of the e86, they are more space and structural rigidity. In reality that’s great if you track the car frequently, then you can carry more sh1t to get there. :D

Looks are subjective and are thus not relative to which one is better :poke:

. . . Says the (former) E85 owner :poke:

Definitely, but looks are likely to be the primary motivator for anyone buying a E86 over an E85, so it counts (. . . Says the E86 owner  )

E86 is also a better value proposition over the long term IMO, being rarer and “last of a breed”. Only thing lacking is wind in the hair, but since I don’t have any, that’s not a downside.

[ref]Zedebee[/ref], enlighten us all what other actual advantages are there :poke: :D

I personally think the E86 looks a bit odd... :fuelfire: :fuelfire: ..standing by for the incoming flak..

The cosmetic differences are mainly for the people who don't get to sit inside. If you own one and are enjoying driving, the differences are almost negligible apart from the sky won't come inside an E86.

For starters, the roof doesn’t often go wrong :poke:
It’s much easier to clean :poke:
You don’t get water sloshing around behind your B-pillars :poke:
People don’t throw half eaten bags of chips into your car :poke:
You don’t get wet if it unexpectedly starts raining :poke:

I prefer the E86 and that is why I bought one . I would presume there are more E85 owners on the forum so putting it to a vote I think the E86 has no chance of winning

I would like one of each

Being a fairy prolific Mcoupe advocate back in the day moving over to an Mroadster… one of the few to go that direction.

The coupe being a better buy doesn’t stack up anymore a great coupe 10 years ago was 17k a great one now is 27-30 whereas you can get a great roadster for 16-20. Even with increase in value that’s a hard one to swallow for essentially the same car and almost the same production numbers for the UK.

The 10k for the rigidity doesn’t stack up I’m afraid especially on the road you would never know. The faster rack in the coupe is better imo.

The coupe is gorgeous but the experience in the roadster is just better you get the noise from the exhaust and induction and you feel more involved. Add the additional extras like the carbon spoiler, CSLs and aero skirts they do look incredible.

The main driver for me buying the roadster is i wanted another M after a few Porsches and I already had a coupe, looking at the market now they aren’t worth the 10k premium imo.

I loved my coupe and think it’s the better looking car but the roadster just does everything the same but you can put the roof down which makes the experience imo.

It’s hard to justify a 2 seater as a weekender and I think a coupe makes it more difficult the roadster you get a multiple season car top down summer top up winter.

That being said in the current market 30k for a great looking 343hp manual sports car is a good looking proposition but at 10+k cheaper for similar mileage the roadster is a true bargain!

Can’t argue with that, as far as Ms are concerned. Back in the ordinary world I maintain that the coupe is the better value proposition long term.

Let's be honest the E85 was always going to win this!

BMW made E85s for 5 years or so but only made E86s for about two. And there were always 5 engine options for E85s whereas there were only ever 2 choices for E86s so there are way more E85s around than E86s.

And probably at least 90% of owners are going to vote for what they have (I certainly did) and the E86 was always on a hiding to nothing.

But who cares what the outcome is? We've all got Z4s and if we have the model we prefer everyone's a winner! :)

E86 all day long…. I might have voted E85 if I lived in Italy or California, but in the UK all we have is cheddar gorge and with the roof down you have to listen to all the 17 year olds hatchbacks with holes in the exhausts, which I’d rather block out….. and that’s only on the 5 weeks of the year it’s not raining.

Very disappointed the E90 is a 3 series

i see what you mean, but I'm not. My daily is an E90 with a glass sunroof - that's the nearest thing to a convertible I'll ever own.

I can respect that  although having never been in a convertible its hard to argue this either way even with an open mind

I'm with Mr Tidy's logic. Only one winner to that question. From a personal perspective, the E86 was never a car I wished to own, the E85 was. I used to walk past them and think, that's a great looking car, then I drove one and bought that car. I still have it. :driving:
