Considering Selling 35is, what is it worth?

What, sunnydays, doesn't your 35is do that you want?

Mine's better than my 911. (Sharp intake of breath?) The 35is is quicker, steers as well in 'Sport + S', its engine & gearbox are more flexible and the suspension's more practical, by which I mean my wife likes it in 'Normal'. (Steady, lads, steady). The only things I miss from the 911 are the back seat - surprisingly useful - and the AWD drive in bad conditions underfoot.

These things said, I've done 14,000+ miles in the 35is since I bought it 11 months ago and I use it. This doesn't mean I abuse it, but I make it sing. Is it possible, sunnydays, that you haven't done the same yet?

Which 911 are we talking about. Must be an old one to be slower pretty much every car from 997.2 is quicker than 35IS and is far more fun to drive. A 997 Cs used to easily pull away from my Z4Mc.

Find that super hard to understand. A 911 with adaptive suspension is about as good as it gets IMO with "sensible money". Super comfortable cruiser and an impeccable sports car which is beautifully made and the interiors especially with extended leather are stunning. You get better sound systems, better seats, and an equal nav system. The sound is also on another level especially with a sports exhaust.

On the sports car front the E89 doesn't even come close. Weight, power, steering, feel pretty much every category. Then theres the fact its designed as a GT cruiser yet with the roof down would be very difficult to do Grand Tour as the boot is non existent unless you plan on doing the trip with the roof up.

The 997.2 and above is better in every single way, I would argue so is a 997 as long as you could source a car thats mechanically sorted. The only downside is initial cost to purchase. The consumables are more expensive but servicing is about on par if you have a good specialist. As soon as you make the jump its not one I could see anyone making the downgrade for.

Taken a 997 and a 991 round Europe and I dont think there is a better car unless you move into the next category of cost.

For what it is and the cost to purchase the E89 is a great car, it would make a great daily and maybe weekend car, the power is on tap and its a great looking car but lets not get carried away, it is what it is. Essentially 3 series weight with 2 seats, a great engine and a tin top with little boot space. Its not a 911.

A Carrera 997 C2s has quite a bit more PTW than a 35is so shuld get the better of it,that said they are twice the money if not more on similar year/miles basis..

If comparing to a 996 then the statement doesnt suprise me,they are sh1t...

Agree.

True but with the way the porsche world has exploded your money should be fairly safe. Theres only one direction for the E89 even the 35IS They haven't reached their minimum value yet and then there will be the effect the Z5 will have when launched.

Looking after the 35IS isn't cheap motoring either with issues that are starting to come out of the wood work that will only get worce with time. Even just the injectors... I thought nice and easy have them replaced. They have to be swapped in 3s and really if one set is going you might as well do all 6. After getting some information from a specialist it can be more complex than just swapping them out. With them malfunctioning it can affect other areas like NO2 sensors, water pump, bent rods etc etc can quickly spiral and the time to work it back to the problem can be time consuming as it would seem the injectors dont always throw codes and depending how long can damage other parts. Without a warranty and without the parts being sorted previously it can quickly eat up a fair chunk of change.

Thats not strictly true, you can replace injectors in singles as long as you sort the indexing..I have done it twice...

Porsche world is a funny place...

I wouldnt even consider any of the cars whichever model on offer under £40k.... And if i was to spend £40k i wouldnt buy a Porsche..

Residuals seem good as long as you wasnt in at the new end,a 6/7 yr old 911 would see minimal loss if kept for a couple of years. That said, the same could be said of the 35is if bought shrewdly..

A 35is is a complex car, anything with high pressure fuel delivery and 2 turbo's is never going to be 100% reliable...

What car is with 350bhp+...Everything has niggles

I agree, but the 997.1 was just a 996.2 in disguise, but, as we both know well, with a different potential fatal flaw: bore-scoring instead of shaft-bearing failure. That said, neither car was bad.

The 997.2, however, was better. Sadly, their prices are going up. A good acquaintance, who promised to sell me his when he bought it two years ago, can't in all sense sell it now, with 50k miles, for less than £45k, which I think is just too much.

(The 991, which I've also driven quite a lot, is a different car altogether and not only because of the extra 10cm in the wheelbase. It is, however, a lot more expensive.)

Funny thing this when I said I was buying a porsche quite few people said oooh their dodgy but I have owned 2 E89's and I thought they were brilliant however one suffered handbrake failure the other roof failure whereas the porsche celebrated its second birthday in september and apart from a service hasnt been back to dealer at all

What would you buy?

Still not a whole lot of choice compared to a few years ago. NA cars are a pretty good bet atm and the whole market has gone up in value.

I had a 2005 Boxster S and it was the 3.2 so same engine smaller bore and it had bore scoring along with a few other things and needed 11k spent on it. Only had 65k on it.

What would i buy with £40k ?

Great choice

About as good as it gets.

Thank you , I have really enjoyed owning it , there are a couple of minor issues the media interface is a mix of touch screen & buttons so not quite as slick as the BMW and roof up rear visablity is intresting but otherwise totally amazing :)

How much was it ?

Hello , guessing you are asking me :) its a 981 boxster GTS & £68.5 k

Yes,

I would hope that a £70,000 Boxster should be devoid of trouble..

You have to expect niggles witha mass produced Z4,thats why its much cheaper i guess

So an update to this. I have owned the 35is for 12 months now and it is an amazing car. How ever I have just been and seen a Aston Martin Vantage 4.7 Manual. I was blown away, the interior was to die for! I never thought I would say I miss manuals, but I miss having a manual sports car!

I am still on the fence around selling the 35is, Im not in a rush and just taking my time and enjoying it in the mean time. The Aston is tempting and I couldnt justify having 3 cars so would likely sell the 35is if the Aston lured me in lol! The R8 is out of the equation for sure, need to see if AM warrantys can be applied to used cars.

Thanks

Make sure you get that warranty, the cost if anything goes wrong :o but even the cost of maintenance is going to be painful.
