Considering replacing 18" RFT with regular 19" tires

Hello:

I'm had my 2005 Z4 for 2 years and gone through 2 run flats (nails) - I'm going to switch to regular high performance summer tires (possibly GY F1's???) new to the Z4 - It was suggested I consider going to a 19"tire and rim - what are the upside/downsides?

Thanks.

I've done the same change as you're considering and don't hesitate recommending it. I do also run Eagle F1's Asymmetrics and the change was for the better indeed. Improved feedback and control (RF's had a regular tendency to tramline and didn't give me as much ''feel'' of the road). Ride is harsh but in a different way than RF's. The car always keeps it's composure under bad road conditions, unlike the Bridgestone RF's that made the car bounce around all the time. Noise level of the wider F1's is actually lower than the OE application also. The only downsides to consider IMO is that the lower aspect ratio of the 19's make them a little more prone to impact damage, such as pinching against the wheel or cuts from potholes. You'll also need to carry around a compact spare or mobility kit.

I have no experience myself with 19" rims other than I think for some rim designs they really do look good. As powerontap noted they will be more prone to impact damage and the ride will be a little bit more harsh compared to 18's and that seem to be the opinion of many other that have run both sizes.

I run 19's at the moment on RF's... The ride is quite harsh at times and when you hit pot holes it does feel sore. IMO the 19's look great on the Z.. I think you will find the ride on 19 non RF's ok apart from on really bad roads...

Cheers
