Considering a z4mr but concerned about harsh ride

are aware that the z4m rigidity figure is higher than a lotus exige which sits at 10,000nm to the z4mr at 14,500nm.... ???????????
Never heard anyone complain that the lotus's flex and less rigidity added towards a bad ride?? Now the coupe double figure is awesome but let me tell you , you never felt flex in your z4m unless your Lewis Hamilton.... And I'm going to guess the roadster z4m is considerable stiffer than a cerb or probably any of the tvrs tbh unless you have the torsional figures to correct me... Damping/stock alignment/springs are far bigger issue and to be honest from the factory , whether coupe , roadster or your e92 m3 for that matter , they are all blunt instruments.

You didn't get on with your z4m roadster which is fair enough, but when I read things like the above it winds me up a-little.

Enjoy your e92 m3.

I didn't say it with the intention of winding anybody up Beedub, It just felt like mine flexed (it probably didn't) whenever I went over bad ruts & heavy pot holes but in fairness it has been the only soft top I have owned so I just wasn't used to it, I didn't get on with the E92 M3 either & that's a coupe so that's now sold.

My bro in law has a E93 M3 folding hard top model & when I went out in that the windows rattled that much when we went over bumps I thought they were going to fall out so I have come to the conclusion that roofless cars are not as rigid as a fixed roof car but that's not to say I cant see the benefits of them the extra noise & a more dramatic driving experience are brilliant.

The Cerb had a full roll cage built into it from standard so was pretty stiff for a plastic car but appreciate what you are saying regards the engineering of the Z4m as beemer have loads more money than TVR!

I am always honest about how I find my cars & I thought my M3 was overweight, lacked torque & sounded lousy in standard form for a V8 & had crap brakes but I don't say stuff like that to wind people up that's just what I thought of it & I am entitled to an opinion on the cars I have owned.

your definitely entitled to your opinion, as im i entitled to challenge it :poke: :poke: just thought id throw some actual figures into the flex / rigidity comment that ive read a-few times now :-)
not to mention the performance cars that dont even make it on that list i posted above.......

You certainly know your stuff Beedub  I am not that technical minded & your post does make interesting reading. :)

I am a lover not a fighter Beedub & seeing as you have one of the most sorted Zeds out there who am I to argue & I would love your motor sat in my garage for sure

how are you enjoying the e90 330i anyhow?? great all round vehicle imo and at a price point which really wins....

Tbh lee.... unless we can really afford the big hitters now days, like the GTRs, GT3s etc... were forced to mod our current performance vehicles to get to what WE think is a solid performer.... the pricing on new vehciles has gone insane.... hell today i collected my company pool car from kia and in the showroom is a friggin 32k KIA.....lets not talk about about cars we revere as high peformers.... lets look at the gt86/brz.... 30k cars again, little fiat 595 abarth 30k..... so to be able to pick up a decent z4m with a proper REAL performance engine with real pedigree and throw some high performance dampers on it and be able to perform the way in which they do for sub 16k is imo.... about as petrol head as you can get..... for me... my little z4mr is a absolute keeper and i'm really pleased with its slow evolution.

funnily ive been spending loads of time in a little 2002 nissan micra i purchased from one of my clients with 8k on the clock, bone stock/utterly immaculate car and let me tell you.... i LOVE the cheap motoring and worryless factory of running around in it... all for 1500 quid..... lovely.... dont know whats happened to me, but the wafty soft suspenion is delicious and extracting speed from it is actually fun as you really have to try and read the road ahead...

Really good thanks

It isn't a rocketship by any means but I know it will do for me what it says on the tin & the engine is silky smooth which I like...I would love as you say a GTR or GT3 but whether that happens one day who knows, your Zed is a stunning bit of kit & I respect how well you look after it & how clean it is...not to mention what a big smile it must put on your face. :D :driving:

thankyou, its been a real labour of love and as as gay as it sounds.... i enjoy cleaning and looking after it as much as driving it.... i look forward to carrying on with its direction as ever :-) thanks for taking constructive argument well and not spitting the dummy... after-all mines only another opinion on the internet :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

how about some pics of the new one then???

Haven't really got any decent pics yet but when I have I will get some up...the E90 wouldn't win too many beauty contests though!! I think its look good in Le mans blue though & its been well looked after by its previous owners & it only has 48k miles on it which I didn't think was too bad for what is nearly a 8 year old motor.

I love the attention to detail you give yours & with that much power it must be a riot to drive...enjoy it. :) :) :)

I had a mx5 and at 5150nm/deg I am not surprised, you often felt yr ankles going in a different direction to your arse :D .
I am surprised at the 360 Ferrari spyder though.

Where do you live Phil? There's often an owner who will take someone out for a run.

I live in Chelmsford. Just got back from my xmas break so hoping to get out to see a few over the next few weeks. Hopefully the harsh ride concern is just my usual problem of reading too much online before actually trying the thing!

Too far from me, but test driving is a good idea. I switched from an Alpina (which has stock 3.0 rear, and modified front suspension) to an M and I can't say I've noticed the ride being firmer. To be fair, the Alpina rides on 19" wheels whereas the M has the standard 18" 224 wheels and if anything, it's slightly less prone to tram-lining.

The ride is fine if the roads are fine.
The problem I had was that the roads are terrible where I live at the moment & it showed the ride up to be very poor but if I lived in a different county maybe I wouldn't have had an issue with the ride... its pothole heaven in Lincolnshire & all the tarmac is consistently broken.

Hi,
I live near Lincoln and agree about the roads. I've had my Z4 3.0 for about 3 months and find it fine apart from the really bad roads which I avoid. My car has M sport suspension specced from new and I was concerned about the ride until I test drove it - no problem at all!

Not sure I know what harsh ride means. From a comfort point of view I've never felt remotely uncomfortable in the MR. I've done several 500mile plus in a day trips, over the past few years and being the wrong side of 50, all I can say is it's soft enough for me and MrsG.

What I do notice, is when your pushing on, down a poorly surfaced road, the MR will give you occasional moments of clenched buttocks, as it randomly skips a piece of tarmac that a Boxster would probably just drive straight over, with a little tug at the wheel. We call it fun.
