Considering a Z4m Coupe

Hi Guys been browsing your forum for the past week so thought I would register.

I am very keen on a z4m coupe, i think they are already a modern classic.

I have found this one for sale on piston heads - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1386897.htm

It looks remarkably good value, especially with sat nav & heated seats, especially on a 2007 plate for under 20k. Although i live in Essex, by luck (or fete (trying to justify this)) I am visiting North Yorkshire next week so will have a look whilst in the area.

Is this car good value or am I missing a trick here, what should I be looking for if i visit the car??

Any tips would be most appreciated

There is a previous thread on this car, quite recently, seem to recall there were a few potential issues, hence why it was so cheap... one thing i have learnt since i upgraded from my 2.5 roadster to my MC is that history and timing of services is far more important, a good one is great, get a friday car and its expensive.... have a dig around and see if you can find it...
 
There have been LOTS of previous threads!

It's been 'sold' and re-listed about 4 times that we know about and possibly more. That's something dodgy in its history - one previous would-be buyer was on here recently; I seem to remember something about differing tales about whether the initial running-in service was carried out or not.

Wouldn't advise.
 
Thanks for the replies, i 'assume the advert details the running in service at 12k miles??!! will BMW be able to confirm if the running in service was carried out??

Can anyone direct me to this discussion / link i have had a search but cannot find it.

I have heard a lot about these running in services, what work is carried out in them?!

I have driven this car and was all set to buy it. It has not had the run in service at all. The car has been sold 5 times and been brought back. The advert says 28k on the clock when i drove it 2 months ago it had 33k on it off the to of my head. The car was sold when i first phoned about it then came back up for sale 2 days later when i went to see it the sales guy told me the guy who bought it had lost his license. This turned out to be a lie and is was returned due to the run in service.

An M car with the running in service carried out at the wrong time is toxic, the trade will not want to touch it when you come to sell. It seems that they are nearly impossible to resell as they are seen like a potential timebomb ticking away. From what I have been able to gather, the newer the car, the worse the perception in the marketplace. A bit like cat D repaired.

If it was an otherwise well cared for year 1998 Z3M with 80k miles I would probably say if it was priced right then go for it, because if anything were to go pop it would have done by now!

There is an 08 plate roadster in interlagos out there somewhere which also missed its 1200 mile. It was sold from a Volvo dealership in Warwick this time last year. Someone is happily driving it about somewhere, probably not realising the fact that BMW will not honour a drivetrain warranty claim should they ever need it.

Cheers for the posts guys!! It apears that 'Tony' from the lotus dealer will be stuck with this car unless he sells it for less than 15K!!

How do people 'forget' their running in service, isnt this FOC??
 
I think it's chargeable now, but at the time you're right, it was free.

I bet Grange Lotus wish they'd never set eyes on that car now. Shame really 'cos it is a nicely specced car, love the interior.
 
I can only guess that people forget it because the countdown timer runs to the first oil service (10-14000) not 1200 miles. Or, they are in a position that the lost of value makes little impact to them and as such have little incentive to remember to have it done.

I wonder what would happen on a scenario where you have the car from new, on a PCP (balloon), then you hand it back after three years having missed the 1200 mile service?
 
I would imagine that the Baloon is a value based on mintaining the car to the required standard, so would be the drivers responsibility?? Probably lots of small print??!!

At what price would a Z4M without a running in service be worth the gamble, our friend Tony is calling me back tomorrow (I made the call today before the history of this car has arisen) I think i will need to tell him the error of his advert 'FBMWSH'!!

Depends on your risk profile really, but would have to be significant. If the engine lets go you are knackered. I wrote this on the other thread...

I agree with what someone above said, if you needed to move it on again in a hurry you could struggle, I doubt a main dealer would touch it at any price, so you'd be left with private sales and independents. Mint cars with proven history like the couple advertised on here are struggling to sell privately, so I'd say you have no chance of moving it on unless it was absurdly cheap.

Think thats almost a free of charge price then!!

Theres a nice 2007 Z4mc for sale near me (6 miles away) has 42k on clock for 23k, shame for that price I could get one with under 23kmiles really.

Ill keep hunting around!!
 
When will that car go away! LOL. Must be five threads on it.

Echo above, plenty for sale right now so may as well go for one without a 'black' mark, regardless of how much it really impacts the car

Technically I think they could probably sue him for the 'loss', i.e. the amount they got for it with a poor service record vs the amount it 'would' have been worth.

Of course this all assumes

A) he ran it until the end of the agreement rather than settling up early / trading in
B) he handed it back to the finance company rather than selling it privately
C) they even realised (not everyone necessarily knows about it)

....plus it would all be very messy and protracted...
 
The way these agreements tend to work is that they only guarantee the return value if it has been maintained correctly and is within the agreed mileage, so if it was handed back and they got less for it, they "could" pursue for the difference, of course situation will dictate what they do, and if he traded in for a new motor, they may have overlooked this.

Could have sold it via Auction so someone "unitiated" pays book for it ( Like tony :D ) TBH, i hadn't quite appreciated how important the running in service was until i joined here, so assuming its bought by someone who doesn;t know it could have got a decent amount...

as mentioned my cars still forsale, i've got an appointment to view another car on saturday, the dealer has already given me an indication of p/x over the phone, if the car i'm looking at is sound and hes happy with mine then the deal should get done (lol assuming we can agree on the difference!) though he did say that he's not interested in retailing my car so if i can sell it privately that not an issue
