Considering a Z4 M40i

Hiya

I’m looking to change my Mini F57 Cooper S after eight years, and there really isn’t that great a choice of convertibles any more.

An MX5 is too small, Audis and Mercedes don’t do it for me, and I’m not sure the interior on a Mini F67 is an upgrade so I’m giving serious thought to a two year old (or thereabouts) Z4 M40.

I’ve driven a 20i which was nice but no faster than my Mini, and also an M440i to try the six cylinder engine but not yet combined the two.

I suspect a test drive will prove to be expensive, but it’s only money.

Hi and welcome.
I understand you said Mercs and Audreys don't 'do it for you', but if I were looking for a two seater German convertible with plenty of oooomph for £35-40k, there would only be one choice.
I think these puppies would 'do it' for anyone TBH. 900nm or torque and 577bhp! And the noise! You won't get a B58 to make that noise, ever.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I've no experience of the G29 Z4s so can't offer any advice, although Pondrew has never owned a Z4 of any description!

I don't think you'll really know until you go and try one.

We have a F56 Cooper SD remapped..

I borrowed a M40i for a weekend shortly after they were launched ..pre purchase of my e89 35is…

Imho dynamically the f56 is a very different to drive and handling car to a g29..much more roller skate than a large barge..albeit good handling in its own right..

A 20i G29 would be worse than the Mini as same power more weight..

The M40i is much much quicker ..but where you can use it depends…the mid range roll on is much stronger..

Enjoy the test drive

Yes the B58 is a stunning engine, bags of power and torque, super smooth, but incredibly efficient too when driven carefully.
You can make really swift progress though without exceeding 3k rpm!

I was surprised how little difference there was. Definitely fractionally slower but the auto gearbox in sport mode offset the weight pretty well.

And I've now had a test drive in an M40i, albeit a short one with low fuel.

Lovely and smooth, plenty of power and a very solid feel to it compare to my Mini.

Unfortunately the HK stereo was a little underwhelming with noticeably less bass so I'm off to look for threads on this specific issue.

Once you test drive the M40i it will prove expensive because you will want one. There are some good deals out there. I got a cracking deal for mine and more than happy. By far the best Z4 I have owned.

Out of interest, was that new or used?

How do you find the HK stereo (if you have it)?

I tried an F67 Mini today and it was definitely livelier than a Z4 20i but unsurprisingly not a patch on the M40i

Belles promenades pour le temps qu'ils nous restent 😀

As long as you have the volume above 40% it's reasonable and at 70% it quite good. We also have the same system in our Volvo XC40 and that is not bad at all, much better than the zed. Ultimately though, I enjoy listening to music in the car and I don't ever feel disappointed in the sound.

If the tops down and I'm alone, I'll be wearing my fabulous B&W Pi8's

Used, tend not to buy new. Wanted this colour so choice was limited but got a good deal on mine.
