Considering a Cayman.

I'm glad to see we're still allowed to have an opinion without being castigated !!

If the EARLY Boxters were so fantastic why are they so cheap now ?

The latest breed of Porches have a much better refinement and yes I would consider one of the latest models, but unlike some I don't want to spend £40k - £50k lining the pockets of the stealers !!

they had problems with Intermediate shaft bearings, if you didn't drive them regularly and at a decent rev level the bearing didn't get enough lubrication, failure was catastrophic. when you get an oil change, a good shop will do an analysis of the oil filter looking for metal parts as a standard check. How do I know this, ? ... i did a clutch job and it is almost a requirement to replace the IMS bearing with a new design replacement. The new IMS bearing is $800 just for the parts.
clutch and IMS plus a couple of other things to get it up to snuff = $5,500
A 2002 S model is worth about $ 24K here in Western Canada
I got the car for a really good price 8) 8)( it was a "tester " for me to see if I liked P cars.)

PS: I'd get a Cayman if I had no need for the giant sunroof in the Boxster :D :D
and I'm always looking for a mint condition 2002 Z3MR

The poor mans Porsche line is a bit tired now isn't it - yes the 1 gen Boxter is cheap but so is the corresponding 911. Not a dig at the OP but I hear it a lot in the pub - as others have said used to be 914s. No one says this to 3 Series owners .

The Cayman would be a great motor personally I think it lacks the drama of the M but probably a better all rounder and certainly easier to live with as a Daily Driver.

Other candidates....

Aston Martin DB9... Well it's not a Vanquish
Bentley Continental
Rolls Royce Ghost
Range Rover Sport
M5

And don't get me started on the basic SLS in non Black Edition

Surely every car is just a poor's man something else (except maybe a Bugatti Veyron).

Everybody has a budget and it is going to be less than somebody else's.

If I had the money I'd have gone for a 1M, maybe a 997 4S or maybe even a 997 GT3 if I was really flush.

You're always a poor man to somebody.

That said, get a Cayman

Awesome cars loved mine and a more accomplished car than the Z4MC I have also owned (+ 3 Other Z4's)

It will feel much more of a sports car then a 35i , although a DCT 35si could not be ignored. The Zed will also feel more modern inside and have a awesome roofing system and is tbh hard to compare to a Cayman which is a drivers car in comparison . I honestly think my Cayman handles better than the 911's I have owned a really great car. I would seriously consider a Gen 2 so 2009 on-wards even the 2.9 if you can, as it has the DFI engine which is more reliable, sadly there is a failure rate on early models this cannot be ignored, but fitting a LTT , proper servicing , proper maintenance and driving you should be fine on a Gen 1 car. Also a lot of Zed owners have moved to Caymans, nothing like seeing Stuttgart's Finest on the drive or in the garage :D

As regards to the "Poor Mans Porsche" ...........Yawn

My Porker History:

Poor Mans Porsche aka Boxster S

O another Poor Mans Porsche - "Gayman" aka Cayman S Sport Limited Edition

Its going to Blow Up 996!!!! - C4S

Still Going to blow up 997 - Current Ride - C2S

Aka Porsche Fan Boy! :)

If you are looking for a mint Gen 1 3.4s then I have just been tasked with selling my Mother In Laws. 2006, Full OPC service history, only 33k on the clock, Arctic silver, mint condition driven like a granny (literally!) since she has owned it at 6months old! It also had a new engine block and 3 pistons fitted last year due to the well documented bore scoring problem (probably caused by the way its been driven 90% of its life) and has the remainder of the 2 year warranty on the work and parts (the bill for this work was EYE WATERING!). If you want full details drop me a PM.

I have heard of an RS version of a Cayman , limited numbers built in one year only. Not sure if it's true or not..... nice if it was

As mentioned above by Paza, the Cayman (and the Boxster) do outhandle the 911.

All personal opinion but would stick with your Zed search, a much nicer looking car hands down, to my eyes Porsches are pretty boring to look at with non descript interiors.

Tim.

No Cayman RS but as DPG says, there was an R version (a bit lighter and about 10bhp up). There is also a Cayman and Boxster GTS about to unveiled at the Geneva motor show. About £4k more than current S models and about 10-15hp up along with some other minor tweaks.

went surfing today , and walking down to great western in newquay there was a 997 turbo parked up, I know its way quicker than an m , and I know its more sought after than the m, and I know its worth a lot more money than the m,... But 911's are so common that it just didn't, and I know i'm biased ,look as special as the M. :tumbleweed:

Nah....I've always thought they are poor mans porsche......just personal opinion though :poke:

This is almost as good as the "Only hairdressers drive Z4s" line.

It's horses for courses.
The Porsche seems to pip the zed on most reviews (but only just by a half or one star).

From my point of view after owning both, I prefer the porsche. I can't comment on performance as my zed was a 2.0, the porsche is a 3.4. No comparison.
Just a couple of observations that helps my preference are the looks, beautiful classic sports car styling.
Getting in and out is waaaay easier. The door on the porsche is set further forward so you are not swinging your legs out on the narrow part of the opening.
The computer/sat nav is touch screen with surrounding buttons to control and also controls on the steering wheel so you have 3 different ways to use it but it's not cluttered at all.
Dash clocks - normal with a digital readout as well also the sat nav shows next move on the clock as well as the screen.
Cup holders!! Proper ones!!
Bags more storage in the front and rear boots.
Handling, even in this wet I can feel the difference. It's going to blow the zed out of the water on dry, summer roads.
Just a few observations off the top of my head but saying that, I'd have a zed again in a heartbeat, preferably bigger engine than the one I had. Good luck!
