Considered applying the Parking brake on the move?

Funny enough I was discussing this last week with the missus...I explained about how she would struggle in a manual with no hill assist, we have the auto so no issue, she then asked if the electronic brake would do anything if I passed out at the wheel...bit of wishful thinking on her part me thinks. Anyhow now I know, thanks.

JDM re the J-Turn I am sure you have to tweak the handbrake momentarily to get the rears to lock allowing you to generate the inertia to pull the front around and then boot it at the end of the 180...too many years ago for me to accurately recall but I am certain of the handbrake tweak.

We could try it out with our separated at birth twins :) :driving:

Useful post so thanks, always wondered what would happen if you engaged at speed....now I know :D

Giving some people that button and saying don't press it at speed is a bit like saying "this plate is hot, don't touch it". You know what follows next.

Well I just had to try this today on my way home from work.

Had to say I was impressed with the way it stops. Very controlled but also pretty quick to stop.

So tonight on my way into work I thought I would try an emergency stop using the foot brake.

From around 45mph I hit the brake pedal VERY HARD and mashed it into the floor carpet. Damn, She stopped so quick. Even had a little chirp from the tyres as it activated the ABS system. The flashing hazards are a nice touch.

The foot brake is definitely more brutal, exactly what you want in fact.

I went to a Mazda promotional day a few years back and they were playing with J-turns there. They explained how to do them but never let anyone try :).

Reverse fast, flick the wheel, handbrake to lock the wheels so you slide, and then into first.

I can't see why you would use the handbrake in a j turn. As mentioned in a j turn you are gunning it in reverse and then flick the front end round, hence you need to lock the front wheels up to slide the front end not the rears. It's the opposite of a handbrake turn!

Before you had ABS you could stab the brake pedal as you spin to lock the fronts because of the brake bias, but by coming off the power in reverse it flicks the weight to the forward (back) of the car & unladens the front wheels so they get less traction, flicking the handbrake sends the weight back so it's not worth doing. Much more important to have the DSC off so you can light up the rear wheels & not get bogged down when you pull off :driving:

cool feature on the EPB .. is the button hidden then? can imagine small children pressing it.
