That was interesting, looked up that app on my computer.
OK can only use on phone, tablet, etc.
It came up with Nexus 7 and said i used it yesterday, which i did at work.
But how did it know?

Scary.

The explanation is a long essay typed affair, but it could be distilled into a couple of explanations:

. Tracking cookies
. Ad profiling

Essentially, everything you do online is tracked, and your unique id is targeted with relevant ads.
It’s not a tin foil hat moment, it’s just how internet advertising is done. It’s also not a great thing. You can mitigate with use of a VPN, but it’s mostly harmless.

A bloke on the telly once said the currency on the internet is your privacy.

You’re planning a holiday in Spain, you get adverts for sunscreen lotion. What’s the harm, right?

But it’s far more nefarious. It’s used to mine your voting patterns, your illnesses, jobs you’ve looked at, your sexual preferences, etc. And often times it works against your best interest.

An acquaintance says capitalism will eat itself alive. He’s onto something.

The details escape me now, but once at home wifey and I were talking about something, never Googled it, and it came up in the adverts. We don’t own smart speakers, which IMO is utterly naïve to own one. But we have iPhones, though we don’t use Siri. Coincidence? My eye.

Is your TV connected to the internet?

I've always wondered when people talk about this topic... why should I care if anyone is listening to me or knows what I do online? :tumbleweed:

It’s a complex topic.

It’s not as straightforward as: ‘I’m not doing anything wrong so I have nothing to hide’

It can affect car insurance quotations, credit applications, etc.
much more. You could probably do a degree on this subject.

I suppose the biggest downside that it is slightly creepy.

The other downside is if you lived in a country which suppresses the media, or objects to looking at pro democratic ideology, it wouldn't take long before there is a knock at the door. (Not naming any country names of course!)

I am sure there are plenty of informative youtube videos about it. It’s a pretty interesting topic.

Fortunately I either live in a country that does not suppress the media, or I live in blissful ignorance. Either way, I'm happy.

My car insurance is cheap and I already have more credit availability than I want or need.

It probably is a complex topic, but I'm quite simple

1st scenario...
OK, so when on your PC did you (or are you already) log into your Google account?
If so then your Google account will be connected to your phone, hence why it knows!

2nd scenario...
You're using the same browser on your PC as on your phone or you are logged into the same Google account. ie; I use my same Firefox account on my PC as I do on my phone and they are synced, I've also set up sync with the works Microsoft Edge log-on as well, this way I have all my bookmarks available to me wherever I go, but this also keeps me logged in and search history between accounts.

If you use google at all in any format where you 'log in' they know pretty much everything about you. A recent experiment I watched was very interesting and revealing.
The investigator Had two identical google based phones, one set to flight mode and one completely disconnected/location services -the lot so you would basically consider it disconnected and a dumb plastic brick in your pocket.
They then spent a day touring a major city with both phones left untouched on the investigators person.
At the end of the day they connected both phones to the internet/wifi etc via a device that recorded all data transmitted and received and the results were astonishing.
Not only do BOTH phones show exactly everwhere you have been they can even tell when you go up steps, get in and out of a car, which store/attractions you visit and much much more, none of which your consent is asked for.
Nothing surprising of course when the google business model is based on gathering and selling data.
To put it in perspective though who really cares what us average joes do, "WOW Marks been to Tesco - breaking news" etc.
Did anyone see the episode where US Military were taking their google phones to work at secret military installations - google had all their tracking and location data which provided an accurate map of each installation down to corridoor level - muppets.
