Connected drive.. New apps..

FYI it seems BMW have updated the connected drive (BMW online) portal with a new mobile office app suite. You can now get email, online address book access and more. iCloud is supported as is yahoo, hotmail, aol etc

For ease you can configure online or if you're in for some pain you can configure direct in the car.

Cool. Dose this support exchange server? Do you need internet option to make it work?

An unrelated connecteddrive question. Saftey cams on sat nav do these update via internet?

you need connected drive and the subscription up to date and then you need the app.

you still need to have BMW online portal as well.

No no.. BMW apps is entirely different. They're iPhone related.

I'm talking about software apps you can install via BMW online.

Launch BMW online on the idrive and there's a new BMW MOBILE OFFICE area where you can setup email and online contacts etc. all new stuff as its been stuff like yelp and google only for ages.

On mine it reads out your emails etc (from yahoo mail in my case). Fab!

BMW must have updated the apps recently as it wasn't there a few months ago.

I shall have to give this a go later on!

Edit:
Already had my Blackberry connected to the car and that notifies me when an e-mail or text comes in and will read it out to me (you can scroll through the message if you are at a standstill).

Have set up my g-mail account on the ConnectedDrive website, so just need to see if it works in the car!

Anyone know what the "Text templates" bit is for? Tried looking for an explanation but couldn't find one.

Seems there are some new iPhone apps too;

Quite whether we'll get these in the UK though...

Ohh "TuneIn" would be great I use that at work on my phone over wifi. I assume the data goes via the car and is not a paired bluetooth phone? Hopefully the data signal for the car will keep up!

Do you need the internet option for these apps?

oops: just read that again. Only for iphone!

No, BMW apps that are iPhone related use the iPhone data connection.

iDrive apps via BMW Online do use the car's own data connection.

Hopefully they will launch some andriod apps before I get my car! Or soon after! In the meantime I might go to local pawn shop and get an old ipod touch and hook it up to Samsung S3 via wifi. That should work!

Why wouldn't I on a brand new car with a media package?

Because BMW Apps is an option, its not standard. If you have the media package, it may be included though. Everything other than the windscreen is optional on BMWs!
