Confused Noobie of Bridport.

Hi all, I'm probably the oldest noobie on the block. I am no longer a rubber burner or 4wheel drifter (it used to be drugs, sex, and rock'n'roll, and on a good day I can still manage 2 out of 3, but not 3 out of 3).

My driving pleasure these days leans towards gobbling up the miles crossing Europe. So I think I am looking for a post 2012 2 litre. (open to views). The cabin fits me like glove. The outside has more style and elegance than anything else for twice the money. *So 1.8/2.0/2.8?? I am inclined to 2.0 but open to views.

Most I have seen are MSport, but I have seen 2 or 3 that are advertised as not MSport. Beyond the obvious body kit **what was the MSport package post 2012?

In particular if a post 2012 non MSport car has the Comfort/Sport switch to the right of the gear stick ***does it imply that it has MSport spec suspension?

I don't want a hard ride. Clenching my teeth to retain my fillings is not my idea of happy motoring. ****Can MSport suspension fit the bill or should I go for non MSport suspension?

I think you are going to tell me to try them and see how they feel, and that is certainly part of my plan. But I really would welcome the views of people who have driven Z4's for 000's of miles rather than me just relying on a few 10 minute test drives.

I will certainly ditch the run flat tyres whatever I buy but *****how much difference does wheel size make to comfort/handling

I told you I was confused. :driving:

Thanks in anticipation.

welcome! You might get more replies posting in the E89 forum: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=23

I'm a lowly E85 driver so can't help you from experience but I do know you can map a 20i to perform closer to a 28i, which is enticing!

Hi and welcome to the forum OP.

Sadly I can't really help you either as I've only had E86s.

Hopefully an E85 owner will be along soon to help out!

You are just round the corner from me and we have 2 at the moment. I'm more than happy to show you round them to see the differences and take you for a spin if you wanted.

Wow, that's some offer - the power of Z4 forum in action.

There are lots of opinions on which engines are best. But most would agree the 2.0 is the most economical to run. The six cylinder engines have a more sporty sound which many owners prefer. The M suspension is harder than the SE but changing from runflat tyres leads to a significant improvement. The E89 is more of a GT than the previous generation of Z4, the E85/86 which drives more like a true sports machine. I have just sold an E85 for a six cylinder E89 with MSport suspension and I find it very comfortable and not too firm. I am no Spring chicken ( being in my seventies) and like you was seeking a good level of comfort which this car provides. Good luck with your search and as you indicated you really do need to try the different trims to see which best suits you.

GridIron, you need to have made 3 posts to send PMs.

Hopefully M M M will read this and PM you, or just put up another post and PM him.

A word of warning... what you think you want is not what you may end up with, especially if cruzin in Europe... & asking this place 4 advice :poke:

When, not if, you try a six pot with an auto box you’ll pause... especially when you find they’re not that much more to run - my old 3.0 E85 only dropped below 30mpg when I was trying unsuccessfully to loose Bing.. otherwise mid 30’s - The E89’s are even better...

It’s the ambiance & silky softness (unless stirred) of the 6 pot that no 4er can replicate... so good luck

Up at the top right of the screen there is a "private messages" icon next to your user name. Click on that and it'll take you to your Inbox, then you'll see a "Send PM" icon.

Interesting read, this! Which 2 of the 3 are you managing? (Without going in to too much detail  ).

Just a note having driven in my Z4 down to the Alps a year or so ago - I had no issues with ride quality on the continent with M-Sport suspension and non-RFTs. As I'm sure you know, the road surface on the continent is SO much better than over here!
