Confused? I am now.

Just looking into insurance quotes on a town hack. Thought I'd see how much a 97 plate Pug 307 would cost, 3rd party only, same spec in terms of drivers and parking (garage) as the ///M.

Confused.com is saying the cheapest I can get is £558?!?! WTF? Thats about £100 MORE expensive than my Zed fully comp.

Third party fire and theft increasingly is more or at least as expensive as fully comprehensive. It was suggested to me that this is because those who take out third party only are less careful drivers who do not care about their cars. Also, insurance is based on perceived risk, which itself is derived in part from the history of theft and accident for that model. The ///M coupe is extremely rare, largely driven by people who are passionate about the vehicle, and (I suspect) kept in areas of relatively lower risk of theft (decreasing the number of claims made).
A cheap old 307 will be one of thousands that have been thrashed, crashed, and stolen, pushing up the relative risk for claiming for that vehicle.

Don't forget you're also starting at zero no-claims on the Pug, because you can't split no-claims across policies, and you can't transfer you NCB over to the new policy because you won't get insurance on an M with zero no-claims. I couldn't insure my 3.0si on a completely new policy because it was classed as a performance car. Got the fright of my life, as did my bank.

I had a company car previously, the company had made me claim on the insurance for a new wheel when I drove over a half brick that fell out of the truck in front of me and punctured the tyre and the alloy itself - so couldn't demonstrate no claims. Had to insure the Z on the existing policy for my wife's 8 year old 100k+ miles Honda Accord worth £3k with 10 years NCB (min of 2 yrs no claims to insure the Z), got a reasonable price for where I live as it's not garaged, only a small hike on the premium. Then had to insure the Honda from scratch - came to £1,279, more than twice the cost of the Z

Apparently all premiums have gone through the roof since the beginning of the year, especially when you're starting from a clean slate...

Axa allowed me to use my no claim bonus on a 2nd new policy

:-o

EDITED 10mins later, after some research...

Seems that generally using your NCD on a new policy alongside the existing is not allowed by most companies, though Tesco and Admiral seem to do it in addition to Axa. The problem is that if you are allowed to do it and then make a fault claim then the NCB on both cars is impacted, and both policies will get more expensive. Seems my own problems are related to me needing both me and my wife insured on both cars, my 'fault' claim on my company car and Direct Line being b@ if it's only you named on both policies it seems arguing that you cannot drive both cars at the same time can carry some weight when wanting to use No claims history on 2 cars / same policy.

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread - worth asking our resident insurers if they can help I guess ?

email from Axa

"If a customer has their first car insured with AXA Car Insurance we can offer a Second Car Discount providing:

? Your proof of no claims bonus has already been received on your current policy
? The new policy is arranged with the same policy holder.
? There must be no open or fault claims on the current policy within the current policy year.
? All claims and convictions are recorded accurately on all policies.
? All drivers have to be over the age of 25 on all policies.
? If there are only 2 people declared on the policy and the second driver is under the age of 25, we will allow the policy holder to mirror the no claims discount providing the named driver is the policy holder?s spouse or partner. In this case no other drivers can be added to either policy.
? The current policy must not have any outstanding balance or payment issues.

If you meet the above criteria we will mirror your current level of no claims bonus entitlement. In the event your policy is required to be cancelled part way through the insurance period we will be unable to provide proof of no claims bonus, so to ensure you receive full benefit of your discount your policy must remain in force. If you do not meet the above criteria, you may qualify for our Introductory Discount, which the system will automatically generate.

Once you have purchased your quote please telephone the No Claims Discount Team on 0844 209 4209. Your call will be charged at your local rate. I hope this answers your query.

Very interesting indeed. Lots of things there I hadnt considered especially with the price of 3rd party only vs fully comp and the 0 year NCB. Dont think Esure do multicar but cant turn this years renewal down as its about the same as last year and everywhere else was ridiculous. Ultimately its not worth me insuring a £700 car for £600.

I had exact same problem.

2nd car (Golf) was £1600 versus Z at £800, due to zero no claims on the Golf.

In the end Admiral multi car gave me £500 for Golf (comp) and £450 for Z!

Would recommend giving them a bell.

I second Admiral. As I'm the only driver on both my ///M and 320d policies I have my full no claims bonus on both cars on the understanding that I don't try to drive both cars at the same time...they clearly haven't considered the small possibility of me crashing one car into the other :D

I third admiral - When I got the Z, they canceled my existing jag policy, insured the Z as the main car but in my wife's name (no more than one parking permit per person where I live so need this in her's) and the jag as secondary in my name with both of us as named drivers on the other all for £250 more than I was paying for the jag on its own. Not bad considering both are parked on street in central London!

They also allowed my wife to have no claims even though this was accrued through her being a named driver in the jag only.

Was quite surprised at how reasonable they were...as normally insurers get a bit nervous when you come to them with something 'novel'.

I just insured a 130 mph 600cc motorbike ( Suzuki Bandit S, 1997 "P") for knocking about on over the winter TPFT for £ 57. Bargain. The bike's worth about a grand, so cheap fun.Bikes are so much cheaper to run as toys than cars.
