Confused about rear light on my Z4C (or facelift Z4 E85)

Hello everyone,

I'm a long time reader of the forum having purchased my Z4C a few years ago (acquired from another forum member whose name i cannot recall).

I am confused about what i need to fix the driver's side rear light. The static light that remains lit when the lights are turned on is not working on the right hand side. It is the section at the top of the light cluster that looks like several LED strips. I've checked the RealOEM site which lists 4 bulbs for this model;

Longlife bulb 12V 21W H21W 63217160788
Longlife bulb 12V 16W 2 63217160897
Longlife bulb P21W/12V/21W 63217160790
Bulb silver 12V 21W 2 63217160897

However, according to the manual these bulbs do not relate to the 'tail light' that illuminates the cluster when the lights are on.

I came across other posts on the forum that seem to indicate that this will require an entire cluster change, but before i go ahead and do that i thought i'd check with someone here. Any thoughts?

I had a problem with my coupe rear driver side cluster, turned out that the multi pin connector had corroded inside and was causing poor connection/ erratic lighting

Perhaps worth a check before concluding you need a new cluster :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
 
As far as I am aware the sidelight in the rear clusters is LED. I think you may have to partially ( hopefully ) half destroy the unit to effect a repair.If at all possible. Look for easy fixes first, as above, bad pins or connections.

It is an LED, not seen anybody fix them yet.

Thank you for all the replies and this does seem like a sensible option to consider. Is the connector something that can be replaced if found to be faulty?

I would guess so, the number is usually in the plastic somewhere if big enough to stamp! :)
 
The other thing that seems clear is that the primary light on the rear light cluster does seem to be a built in LED of some sort, that cannot be solved with a simple bulb replacement.

My problem was the corrosion was on the unit mounted pins and not the multi pin connector on the loom and by the time I realised I had sourced another unit.

On reflection I may have been able to get a dremell or something similar in there to clean it up
Hope you find source of your issue without having to replace the unit
