Configuring software on e89

Apologies if this has been asked / answered previously, I did try a search but couldnt find what I'm looking for.

On my e85 I remember taking it to a garage where he plugged in a laptop to the car and could configure such things like opening the hood from the key and making the car beep when it was locked etc

Is there such a place that does this for the e89 if it's possible to do?
 
There is a shortlist of items that the dealer may do, there is a much more extensive list that an independent can do, or, you can buy the software and cables online. As few here have done this and I'm sure they'll chip in with their experiences. Its something I've avoided for fear that BMW may use it as an excuse for any warranty claim, but that may be a non issue.
 
If anyone is in the North East and has one of these I'd be hugely grateful if they could configure some options, I'll come armed with my cheque book too of course :)
