condition based servicing

So basically I went to book my z in for its inspection II at a specialist (i wont use the main dealer again after they took it on a 30 mile joyride), but they said that they run condition based servicing ie. Diagnostics, oil change and any necesary work. Am I right in thinking that clearances etc still need to be checked as per the inspection?

Also when it did go into the dealer for the last oil change (the inspection was due in 10k kms) they resest the computer so now it just shows 15000kms until the next oil change not the 8000 till the inspection that was on there.

Apparantly the BMW system has changed.. Can anyone confirm if this is ok or if I should still be getting my inspections done?

Condition based servicing isn't relevant on our cars. They need to follow the simple service routine as per you service book. You can have more oil services between inspection services though if your not doing the miles.
 
There is no system on the car to monitor conditioned based parameters, so I doesn't matter if they claim BMW have changed their system. The car hasn't changed.

Its a fairly simple schedule to follow.

Run In
Oil
Insp 1
Oil
Insp 2
Oil
Insp 1
etc

I would forget what the cars computer now says. Go back and look at your last service date, and mileage and work out when it needs doing. Not longer than 2 years, and no more than 15k miles (Less if its driven hard). Remember nothing wrong with getting it serviced early if your not sure.

Just make sure who ever is doing it is using the correct oil for an M car. Sounds like no one knows what they are talking about to be honest!

terrible advice...

The car doesn't tell you when it needs a 2 yearly oil service / brake fluid change. But the service booklet and perspective buyers (when you come to sell) will tell you very quickly that you no longer have a full service history
 
Has worked for me, though i miss read the bit where the schedule had been screwed up by BMW so probably need to put that right first.
 
Dont know if this is valid or not on a Z4 but my mini shows when the oil and brake fluid has to be changed.

Phew just checked my service book and its bang on , always within 2 years and 15k , altought one is slight overrun by 778 miles but am cool with that :D :thumbsup:

It does tell you every two years for the brake fluid service. Oil needs to be reviewed manually though.
 
So do these not tell you Inp 1 due in x miles, Inps 2 due blah blah blah?

Plus don't the keys hold info on brake and coolant so when you stick it in for insp they tell you then if it needs doing.

They tell you for Inspections (although not 1 or 2, I believe it just says "inspection"), but not for oil services. Srhutch is right, it does flag up when a brake fluid change is needed, but the reality is that you can't merely rely on the car to tell you.
 
Agreed, as an owner you need to know in your head what your next service is and when, whether it be time or distance based. For me it's oil/brakes every two years with an inspection thrown in every once in a blue moon.
 
thanks for the replies :) Thought that was the case, I don't get many miles done in her - just 8k kms in two years which considering I used to run cars up about 50k miles a year is a nice change! I haven't done enough to reach the next inspection point (until now) but have been annually changing oil. Couldn't see how they would run a diagnostic on the inspection matters - and am a little annoyed about it as I was going to have a fair bit of work done but like said above -I've lost confidence! but I'm equally annoyed by the main dealer who reset the counter (not a big deal as I know in my head that the inspection was due and hve a full history but its ne more thing to think about rather than have the counter remind me after each drive)

It was however just the receptionist - she seemed nice enough but seems like she didn't know the difference between a Z4m and a z4 :/ going down to talk to the owner about some other work so will get his opinion and make sure he knows his stuff before I commit.

I've gone off the main dealer after they put 30kms on it on the last oil change. I can't really think of any excuse which is good enough to warrant it, yeah it's only under 20 miles but what possible reason could there have been other than the young mechanic taking it for a 'test drive'. This was months ago and I've been meaning to complain but forgot :lol: I'm ocd when it comes to anyone driving my car - ie no one ever, ever drives my car!
