Condensation in headlights solution

Ok I know this has been talked about a lot.

I recently upgraded my halogen lights to hids and since then had condensation in both lights.

I tried taking the lights off the car. Took them inside and drying them properly. Then I swapped the seals left to right so I could invert them to make good of a fresh sealing face.

It came back.

In the end I purchased two new covers from the dealer. £29.90. On inspection you can see compared to the old seals they fill the gap and sit proud so ensuring a good seal. They old seals had shrunk so I was never going to get a good seal.

I've heard someone put a thin bead of silicone on the inside of the cover. Then when it's set, you put the rubber seal back so it can sit nice and proud, to create that water tight seal :) but obviously that fix could be hit or miss

Did your two new covers solve your condensation issue? :)

Time will tell as I have to drive 165 miles to work on Saturday. Given the weather it should be a good test.

Just a note. Due to the original seal shrinking latterly as well as height it was not in contact with the mating face as it was off centre

Quick update

After my journey today across the M62 and then up north where I was greeted with 6 inches of snow and frozen roads(fun), I am happy to report my lights have remained condensation free. :D

Back in the day, when I was young and poor, I drilled a hole in my xr3i headlights. Foolishly I sold it for £250 because my parents didn’t like it on there drive

Another thing to remember is that halogens make considerably more heat than HID's so your seals have probably been bad for a while but the heat was clearing the condensation out. Cooler light source and the condensation stays. Silly how improvements often find us another issue to fix. :headbang:

Good point. No point in messing about with old seals. For £30 just replace and have done.
