Concerning noise from engine

Hello all,

I have a worrying noise coming from the engine of a Z4 coupe N52. Id really appreciate your comments but have not idea how to load the short video I have of it. Could someone guide me on this initially please?

Sure we can help, but you need to provide more info.

When does the noise happen, all the time, when you start but only for a few seconds/minutes. When hot or cold etc.....

Many thanks, it happens all of the time. I think the video I have will save a thousand words, how do I embed a video in to posts? Sorry to be thick - I'm a technophobe newbie

Ok, I'm hoping the above provides a link to my video

The engine was warm. The mic was held driver side above the corner of the cam cover at the bulkhead. There are to my mind two noises, the continual ticking and secondly, the lower tone whirring. This is coming from the bulkhead end of the engine so is not an alternator pulley bearing for example. Views?

Ticking sounds normal,

Second sound sounds like the clutch release bearing, press the clutch in as it should disappear.

I've got that clutch noise. Only noticed it a few weeks after getting the car as it only occurs when everything is nice and warm. After looooads of research I concluded the clutch noise isn't anything to worry about. Several people on here even managed to get their clutches and dmfs replaced under warranty only for the noise to return.

Ticking like a N52! Sounds always a bit alarming at first, but you'll get used to it. Or you'll have too...

Is this not a reason to get the auto. It's reassuring there is nothing to worry about, but I don't relish a great car that sounds like a bag of spanners at idle.

I wouldn't say it is a reason to get the auto, people think I'm mad when I point the noise out to them cos they can barely hear it. I'd be more paranoid owning an auto, niggles seem to be more common with them (although no idea with the z4 one whether that's the case)

Here's a bit more info on the noise. Lay shaft bearing seems to be the most popular cause.

Turn the engine off without depressing the clutch... That noise is even worse, sounds like a bag of bolts.

Engine sounds pretty normal tbh. Do you get any rattling when you start up/turn off, that's more worrying....

Mine started making this noise last week! Only when I've been driving it a long distance and it goes away once the clutch is down or when driving about 10mph...It does however sound like a bag of nails for the first 2-3 seconds after starting it up and also when you kill the engine!

Sound like the same problem?!

All, many thanks for your support with this. It was a car I thought about buying. EML was on too. A read showed the MAF was at fault. Now sorted and no lumpy idle, a smooth engine and the car is mine!
