Morning
I know you chaps are a knowledgable lot. I am having loads of problems with internet explorer 7 being really slow to load up pages. Can anyone recommend any software like old first aid that will sort it? Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Regards Ian

There could be many different reasons, not just IE7, is your internet connection OK, can you check on another PC?

This came highly recommended to me, its free and works really well, it just clears all those cookis etc, not sure if it will cure your problem, but it certainly speedec mine up,

Hi Ian, agree with above - I found the software is rarely the issue. If you don't have another computer to test the connection on do you have anything else that's WiFi (assuming you're using WiFi that is) - iPod, PS3 etc or, on that machine do you have anything else that uses the internet that you can test eg iTunes... or do both. Another device will prove the connection, another app the browser.

Run a full system scan - make sure there's nothing lurking on there that you don't want!

Also, have a look down by the clock for any icons that might indicate something else is happening - if any apps are downloading web updates you should see a notification there - that can really hamper connection speeds - especially if they're downloading a major upgrade.

Finally, if you are running a wireless router that may be the issue - while convenient WiFi really is hit and miss (rubbish IMO). If you have one connect the computer to the router using a network cable - I got this a lot! If the two are close enough bin WiFi! I know with Netgear (from experience) the routers can "wear" over time, hard to diagnose without another though. Try rebooting the router (switch it off and on again) - 2 things, sometimes restarting the services will put things back on track and secondly, if you have someone leaching your service it will kick them off! For a while at least, if it's a pre pack from the ISP it should be secure.

This all assumes of course that you have rebooted the PC first! Also, make sure you're hard drive is not too full - it will hamper writing paging files (virtual memory).

Good luck!

You can download Safari for windows from apple.com - a much better internet browser (but then I would say that being a MacBook owner!). See if that helps work out where the problem lies but as Pawn indicates not normally the software.

I tried that (fellow Mac owner!) on my work PC but with a couple issues - the Apple site through IE is a dog! Also, for some reason Safari on Windows doesn't work with some web sites properly - rendering some multimedia content useless. Tried the Google browser on Windows yesterday - same issue. FireFork? Apparently its 5 years old.

EDIT - Safari on Mac rules! Even pretty good on iPod Touch

On the PC side I'm running IE8 and Firefox 3.55 (yes the company is 5 years old, but this version is only about a week old).

I run Firefox mostly as I can get lots of different add-ons to block scripts, ads, popups/unders on sites I don't trust.

Are you runing AVG ?
There is a known issue running AVG with IE7 - but i beleive its resolved with either a later windows update and or upgrading to AVG 8.5

Could be a raft of things - open task manager (Ctrl/Alt/Del) and look at what processes are running....you can prioritise them by CPU usage. Also look at Performance - if CPU is running near to 100% then somethings running in background. Could be an AV scan? Could also be a fat windows update or other download?

If you havent got them, download AVG and SpyBot (both free) and run full scans.

Are you on wireless? Are you the only one on the router? When my 16-year old is playing that fecking CoD-MW shite everything in the house grinds to a halt!!!

Whats the spec on your machine (memory especially) and what OS are you runnning?
