Compulsive OCD

Just wandering if anyone knows much about this condition or perhaps suffers from it themselves. If you do or have in the past what did you do to overcome it or lessen its affects.

Since my mum passed away just before Christmas I've noticed myself checking things more than once, in fact 4 or 5 times whether its a tap, or electrical appliance, locking the house up or the car to a point its getting on my nerves. I know I'm doing it and know the tap is off, TV off etc but the compulsion is there to keep checking. I don't know if this is a temporary thing i.e. stress related as a result sorting my mums estate out etc and that it will go away or whether it will continue and get worse

My wife said she was leaving me because she can't handle my OCD.

Close the door five times on your way out, I said!

A significant other thinks that I may have it (she's a psychologist) :D. From what you are saying, it could be stress related. But there need to be other symptoms (are you hoarding things too? :)

Hopefully when your stress levels drop the problem will go away. I've had it in the past, after reflecting on it I think it was to do with not remembering what I had just done because my mind was elsewhere. I once went outside 7 times in one evening to put the bin out even though I had done it when I got in from work. I still do it when locking the front door in the morning, still asleep I guess.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping its stress related and will subside but just seems to have developed quickly, but come to think about it I've had it in a very mild form i.e. lock the house door and then go back to check but never checking multiple times.

I'm a bit of a collector but wouldn't say I'm a hoarder :?

OCD tendencies are very common and may be exacerbated by stress. It needn't be a 'disorder' as such, just a response to your grief and the stress associated. Have a chat with your GP if it's a manifestation of you struggling with life at the moment.

This is not a thread for jokes, chap. Tim's had a rough few months from what I've read and we all hope he pulls through. However, that was funny

Thanks guys it's ok jokes is just what I need at the mo.

Will see how it goes hopefully it's just stress related. I do have occupational health people at work so can always have a chat with them.

I go through phases of it. I'll spend weeks making sure of things, like putting on my left sock when I get dressed or my right leg in my trousers first. I seem to have grown out of it a lot since retiring, so maybe there is a link to stress. I do still have to go round the house making sure all the taps off though before I go out, but that's more to do with my deafness as I've gone out a few times and left a hot tap running because I can't hear them.

Some people suffer from it permanently, but for most of us it's something that comes and goes I think. Worrying about it's not helping either so maybe it's time you should speak to someone about it.

On a serious note Tim, i have very bad OCD with work and how i want things run and VERY orgnaised and structured, clean etc etc, thats me normally.
However I do get very stressed at times and that tends to increase my level of OCD, my car IE Z4 is totally and uttery out of control as the more effort, time and money i spend the worse it gets to the point i dont even like anyone sitting in it they could be the hottest naked girl sitting in my seat and all i would think about is that she has her smelly bum on my new mint leather :?
I think most peeple have OCD in one funny way or another, i know that loosing your mum has been tough and thats normal however i wouldnt worry Tim as im sure unless any OCD is not doing harm to you or others theres nothing to worry about, just try and focus on hobbies, gardening etc etc to destress you.
Im no Doctor lol but some friendly advice Tim

Well said JE, and no mention of engine swaps to be seen anywhere :D

 That would have been a complete thread hijack, even by our standards

Take a holiday Tim if you can and get away from familiar surroundings for a couple of weeks if possible.

Thank you, its been great and reasurring to hear of your experiences with OCD, don't feel so alone now. Like some of you I'm a fastidious cleaner, keeping the cars immaculate etc although I've never really associated this with OCD but its got me thinking now :D although keeping things clean its kinda a positive lol especially where the Zed is concerned.

I've had some lovely PMs which has made me think not to let the OCD get too far advanced which I hope it won't.

Tim.
