Completely folded roof *Updated Pics*?

my sweetness, that might just be my problem as well. Going to try it as soon as i get home.

A bit off topic:

Has anyone opened up the trunk and smelled a a circuit frying smell after a slighly enthusiastic drive (meaning I revved up to 6ooo a few times)? And this is from normal Top up driving, with no use of the convertible top at all. Is it possible the heat from the exhaust system in the back is causing this smell through the trunk?

OK I'm back now

This is what I meant, in the first pic the roof is doubled back on itself, but on the other side it folds correctly. I might be imagining it now, but I'm certain if you pull out the roof so it matches the other side (in mid-flight) then after a few goes it will always do that, and it should sit better once it's down.

Mike - great to see you're back on your feet again!

Many thanks mate, will give that a try.

P.S. Apologies for the delay in post, been on holiday.

Well gave that a try but it is still not closing properly. It is better now but I think probably because its a lot warmer (a quick push now closes it properly). Not sure if there is anything else I can do without resorting to having the lock mechanism adjusted?

Cheers all.

Heres the guide :)

EDIT: Just seen your reply, yea you can just push it that last bit. When I asked about this before quite a few people have this issue and they changed it in 2006 I believe.

Hi - this guide mentions another guide - "Instruction 51 16 235" - anyone know how I can get hold of this guide? I've tried finding from the link above but can't get it to work.

Thanks.

Just looks like a reference to a section of the TIS manual that tells you how to remove the storage box as a prerequisite to the repair, rather than a modification or enhancement.

Sorry don't know anything about this at all - how do I get hold of the TIS manual to find this instruction?

It's BMW's service and repair manual.
It covers the service and repair instructions of pretty much every BMW ever made on a couple of CD's. Often bundled with wiring diagrams

Cheaply available on Ebay and can be installed on any pc.

Cool - many thanks.

Not sure why I didn't just ask this before - but anyone have instructions on removing the rear storage box panel? Thanks.

You only have to ask. Try this from pvr:

Ah right, excellent - so all you have to do to get access to the roof catch is to take out the two screws underneath the rear centre panel (the one with the two push handle's) then pull out this rear centre panel?

That seems too easy?!! :D Many thanks.

check the folding of the roof. always fixed my problems

Yeh - I've had a look and there was a kink in the roof which I fixed but it still doesn't close properly (even when its been warm). Not sure what else I can check on the roof itself - any suggestions?

Same problem - fixed under warantee...new hydraulic pump fitted. As people have said, they changed the pump in 2006 as the old one developed problems.

Does anyone have a link that works for the TIS guide? My motor wont stop whirring as I drop the roof, it goes all the way down fine but there doesn't seem to be any connection with the catch. The motor continues to do its thing for as long as I press the button. Ive tried pressing on the roof but that doesn't help. The light also continues to flash.

I had this problem when i bought my car, i took it to an indi who looked at it all and after spending the afternoon lubricating the scissor arms and all the joints it works fine and the error light doesnt come on, they believe the roof hadnt been used for quite a while. Might be worth trying to lubricate it all and see if that helps.

Dan

That's reassuring, I did give it a quick spray of WD40 but will try to get some cycle chain lube instead. The car had been standing for at least a month as the owner had bee away for 4 weeks over christmas.

This has started happening to mine. Tried the 'correct fold' techinique but it's just not going low enough to locate itself on the closed position.

Closes fine, no issues with motor noises or anything, just not opening and sitting flush without a gentle push down and click. Only started doing it during cold weather so maybe it will go away in the spring - just annoying to see the red lights flashing at me!

Re: a DIY fix for this, how tricky is it to adjust yourself?

Hi everyone.

Looking at the first photo shown on this thread, can anyone tell me what the black metal bracket is for, which sticks out towards the roof from behind the plastic trim? And does anyone know the part number for it?

Thanks,

David

Anyone?

That bracket on mine needs replacing and my local specialists indy bmw garage doesn't know what it is, neither does Murketts bmw. Was it removed on face lifted models?

Thanks,

Dave
