Managed to source SMG Steering wheel with paddles and slip ring.

Will retrofit this weekend, looks like a simple job...

Lets hope for a successful update..

As a result will have a spare steering wheel - no MF buttons, any takers? Can even get it leather padded re-trimmed for you...

Offers welcome(sensible ones..)

I've seen this done a few times on 5 series cars... be interested to see how it looks on a Z4. Not that I've got an auto...

anybody got instructions to get to the wires for the gear shift selector ?

pics of how to remove trims preferred

update:

auto electrician fitted all the wiring and steering angle sensor etc.... so far so goood...

However when conected paddles nothing happens...

Eventually we found that the steerign wheel is from an SMG car and as such has resistive paddle switches which is not compatible with the steptronic box....

To fix this he is going to modify the SMG paddles so they work like a standard switch and not by varying resistance in the circuit. That should do the trick as we tested this scenario directly from the pins in the slip ring and it worked...

If I can make a suggestion, if it can be done,I would try and have the paddles work so that the right hand paddle pulled up (or pushed down) changes up a gear and the left hand paddle pulled up (or pushed down) changes down a gear as I from everything I have read pulling the paddles seems a much more natural technique than pushing and pulling.

At the very least I would be interested to know if your chap thinks that it could be done.

As posted I did this a few years back and it's a great mod. Covered loads of mountain passes in the Lakes this weekend on 'paddles', just putting it back into auto in town and motorway home.

To make the paddles work they just need to be momentary on switches to ground the respective up and down paddle movement.

cj10jeeper, I posted a link to your excellent write up, do you think it is possible to wire the paddles up to be, left paddle down a gear, right paddle up a gear?

Yes - i see you did - thanks

I see no reason why you couldn't as each paddle must have 2 independant contact points/switches - 1 up and 1 down.
All you'd have to do is swap over a couple of wires on the loom that connects the left and right paddles before they connect to the top of the slip ring. Theory only as I never did it preferring it oem?

Good to know, I would love to have this on mine as I love the auto box, but think the paddles would be an excellent addition.
