Common issues with m54 engine * edited

Welcome to the forum and Z4 ownership.

The most common issues on the N52 engine seem to be oil leaks from the cam-cover and oil filter housings now the gaskets are old and getting brittle. And the electric water pump will die at some point which will result in overheating within a mile so to avoid being stranded quite a few owners replace them as a preventative measure. But they aren't exactly cheap, around £250 for an OE Pierburg if you don't buy from BMW as they charge twice as much for the same part!

I had two in E86s and liked them so much I got a 325i then a 330i with N52s. My first Z4 needed a new water pump at 60K miles, my 2nd seemed to be on the original when I sold it on 91K so how long they last seems to be guess work. My 325i needed one at 135K, but I've no idea if that was it's first or second replacement.

These engines seem to be bulletproof - an E86 owner recently posted on here about his 250K mile example. But as they get older ancillaries like starters, alternators, etc. are likely to need replacing at some point.

Nothing to do with the engine, but rear brake pipes can corrode in front of the passenger side rear wheel. They go under the car in a plastic cover, but road debris that holds water tends to build up in the end of the cover - no need to ask how I know!

I wanted to have that M experience, but I still think a 3.0Si is the sweet spot in the Z4 range in terms of bang for buck.

Nearly forgot to say we like to see photos of new members' cars!

I finally got round to replacing the electric water pump in May of this year with a Pierburg unit at 116K miles.
It was still working ok at the time but I was starting to worry more & more how long it would last before it would pack up without any notice.
The cam cover gasket & the plastic cam cover itself I had replaced last year at 102K miles. In this case it had to be done because the gasket material had become brittle and was no longer providing a proper seal, which in turn threw everything out of kilter in terms of engine management as I understand it.

The header expansion tank and the awful plastic pipes are prone to cracking so check antifreeze levels on a weekly basis. When shutting the bonnet, there are two catches, one each on the side of the wing rather than one central catch, so make sure both are engaged properly.

It’s a BMW, so it will leak oil; rocker cover, oil filter housing, oil cooler and sump are the usual suspects but they can also leak from the valvetronic motor gasket. Most of the leaks are easy to sort other than the sump which needs the front subframe lowering and is quite a big job. The eccentric shaft sensor can go bad and oil migrates through the sensor, into the electrical connection.

The plastic rocker covers can crack on the black top engines. The CCV system on the silver top cars fails / gets gunked up and can lead to higher oil consumption. The CCV system is heated and there’s a right angle connector at the front of the manifold that can fail and blow a fuse which brings up the check engine light because the O2 sensors are on the same circuit. At worst this connector can catch fire when it shorts!

I’ve never had to replace the water pump in any of the five N52’s I’ve owned but have had to do one starter and I think my wife’s 330i is going to need a starter soon.

They can take big mikes with a bit of care (my wife’s 330i touring is approaching 176k) and a friend took a 125i to 256k before selling it.

Hi,Thanks for the info that is really helpful, I bought her last night with full history but she needs some work, I will plug her in at somepoint as I'm due to go away tomorrow.

I already own a 1 series. But have been keen on getting a 3.0 z4 for sometime.
