Coming to end of AUC

So I am getting towards the end of my years AUC warranty. I think it expires in August!

I think I will probably go for the extended warranty, but haven't looked at type of cover or costs yet.

Do people generally just let these expire, or has anyone taken it to an independent for an inspection to try and find faults, then try and get anything found fixed by BMW under AUC.

I have Bartley BMW near me in Southampton and I think they have a good reputation. I haven't asked them about doing this or costs, but interested what other people have done.

So far, I haven't had any faults with the car, so it hasn't been to any garage since the day I collected it, apart form a tyre!

Any ideas what BMW would do if you went to them with a list of faults picked up by an Indy?

What's likely to fail vs what are you paying?

I personally came to the conclusion the warantee was just a money harvesting system for BMW. Based a lot of that on my experience reading these forums though, the Z4M's seem pretty rock solid.

Extended warranty by BMW Mondial Assistance is fixed in pricing and is depandant only on your year and mileage of M. You can get a quote pretty quickly by calling them https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/

If you let it expire and then take it out - be warned you cannot claim for 30 days once you commence the agreement and pre existing faults are not covered.

If you "feel" something is not right - then just sling it in describing the problem. If you want to "fish" for problem - then I see no harm in this by asking an indy who you trust to have a rummage around. But ask yourself this - what are you going to ask him to look for?

If/when you take this approch - then I dont see no need why you need to tell BMW that you had an indy look over the car and now you need them to fix X Y Z. Just report X Y Z and ask them to investigate and fix. Before you do tho - read the "whats not" included under the level of cover you have so you dont wast your time.

If the list turns out to be long - then It maybe best/better to spread this over a couple of visits. Act quick!

Well I don't feel anything is wrong, but obviously I can only tell what I can feel from driving. There may be things that are worn that I don't know about that I could get fixed for free. I think the AUC warranty is a bit more comprehensive than the extended, but not sure yet without looking.

Maybe I will just investigate how much an Indy costs and work out if I think it's worth it.

I was just looking to get other people experiences really.

Yeah, the warranty vs no warranty is a bit of a can of worms isn't it!

I let mine expire, I've done 4000 miles in my zed in 15 months of ownership and therefore it doesnt warrant the cost of the additional cover. However your situation may be different.

I think the warranty is a waste of money - these cars are mind-bogglingly reliable...

3 years, 40k miles, used and abused daily and nothing covered by the warranty has gone wrong. It just passed another MOT first time.

Tyres, petrol, brakes, servicing - thats where the money goes. If the warranty was half the price I might consider it for piece of mind, but at 80+ quid a month its a rip off, that makes for a very substantial "emergency fund" if you chuck it in the bank/shoe box/wherever

I understand if you have done 40K with nothing going wrong like pilchardthecat their no point having it.
But in my case had the car under 2 years warranty has cost me £1400ish but have had over £3000 on warranty so far :(
so to me its a no brainer.

I've paid out about £4k in premiums over the last 4.5 years & 75k miles, and have had about £15k of work done (engine, diff, wheel bearing, PDC x 2, wiper relay).

Meant to add that the engine was replaced within about 15k miles of me buying the car, and the diff was done in Autumn 2012. As all the other bits had been 'small', I was actually considering cancelling the policy and putting the money into something else. Glad I decided to wait until the new year, and now I'm only keeping it until the end of this year when the car will have 100k on it and the warranty will cover next to nothing (or will ask for a large contribution).

Thanks guys. I need to look at prices I think, but it just takes ways happened to Mmm-five to ruin most owners. I think I would just go for engine, diff and gearbox. I think they call it driveline or similar.

I will try and give my local Indy a ring today and see if I can get a price.

I will report back!

Out of interest, if I went to BMW and said I think there is something wrong with the car, do they charge you to investigate, even if they don't find anything wrong with the car, or do they only charge for work?

30 minutes or so and they won't charge. Any longer and they'll ask you for a contribution in case they don't find anything.

You could simply go to your local/friendly dealer and tell them you're thinking of stopping/continuing the warranty (or that you're selling it), an would they consider giving it a once over on the understanding that any work required would be carried out by them.

The rates they get for warranty work are nothing like the public pay, but then it's better for them than nothing.
