Coloured Waxes - Worth the effort?

I washed and waxed my 08 coupe yesterday for the first time since buying in January.

As per one of my earlier posts, my car does have a large amount of small stone chips and other things you would expect on a daily driver doing 60 miles a day.

Obviously the wax I used dries to a white finish and of course upon buffing all of the stone chips, tar spots etc are made 10 x worse.

I notice turtlewax do a coloured wax for "dark blue" cars, I know this would not be a fix for my problems but surely they woudl help hide some of the defects? has anyone used such a product before? any luck?

See link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Turtle-Wax-500ml-Colour-Magic/dp/B001FOLMR0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1367264949&sr=8-4&keywords=turtle+wax+colour+magic

My car is being used for my best freinds wedding in a few weeks so I would like it looking a little better (shame about the corroded 108's but I cant afford a refurb yet).

Regarding tar marks, what do people recommend, a clay bar? my parents have a large steam cleaner that allows traffic film remover to be fed into the water jet at different percentages, is that stuff any good for removing tar? and does anyone know the safe percentage?

Many thanks in advance.

Personally... I think coloured charges waxes are Ok for a few hours/days then the colour element fades away... I don't use them...

a clay bar can get rid of tar, but be aware that a clay bar is a manual process, and could marr the paintwork with larger bits of tar... there are specific chemical tar removers out there that are far better IMO...

I don't use, or recommend anything but water in a steam cleaner... so can't help with that, sorry..

No ideas about the coloured wax??

Bit father using clay for the first time a few weeks ago. I can't ing it's praise enough. The wife has a white Ford kuga and it was covered in little tar spots.15 minutes with the clay nothing.

Tardis for the tar - look on polishedbliss.com or cleanyourcar.com.

For dark cars, to hide minor swirls and make stone chips more visible, use Poorboys Black Hole (contains fillers and glazes) and then Dodo Juice Purple Haze. 2 coats of each works very nicely - they don't make chips and scratches invisible, but fresh after application you'll be hard pressed to see them from more than 4 or 5 feet away. The best thing is that neither of them fill the chips with white gunk like other polishes.

Hope that helps - other far better detailers than I may have better advice, but the above works on my car.

I'm a lazy but enthusiuastic car polisher & use the PB black hole glaze with noticeable results , seal in after each application with a decent wax

Did you recommend the meguiars wax mr Wilks? If so I don't think I thanked you. And I need to its amazing easy to use and great results. Cheap too. Get some of that speed12.

Personally I feel colour doesn't have a great deal of an effect. I use dodo juice hard candy which is bright pink, but I can't say it has an effect in the paint because of its colour. The second coat is dodo juice super natural and this is creamy white, again no effect because of colour.

I think its more down to the type and quality wax more than anything.

It's weird, colour charged or not, a well-cleaned, polished and waxed car just doesn't allow you to see the scrapes and chips so easily. Must be the way the light reflects / refracts through the products. I've no idea, but I do know that polish and wax is better than none at all. And as Poorboys is full of dark fillers it makes sense that at least some of it will stay in the blemishes.

Ahhhh Mr Bing.... I have a big test coming up that may just answer all your problems....

Got myself a gloss meter, and going to measure each stage, see what really makes a difference...

washing, wet sanding, polishing, cheap waxes, expensive ones, sealants... all getting used and measured...

Bloody hell - been a while since anyone did anything syentifik on here :o

Go for it - I for one will be very interested in the results

Don't start that on this nice thread!!!

Ooooh I am eager to see the results of this thread! I personally use Dodo juice Blue Velvet which seems to mask a bit of the lower skirt 'road rash' but doesn't hide everything...

Stupid question, I assume poor boys black hole is for black colours only?
