cold question

a friend of mine used to have the 3,0L Z3 and he reconed it did something to the power when it was below a certain temp. cant remember what but it was something daft like throttled it back??

do our cars do this. just the sheet of ice on it thismorning made me wonder. All i can say is praise the lord for all that is heated seats. that by the time id finished dicking about were nice and warm. my focus had a heated screen that was a great idea but no leather so no problem before.

Never noticed any reduction in power on mine in the cold :?

+1 on heated seats, especially roof down on a crisp cold morning. I also had a Focus and I loved the heated screen.

all cars will have a slight increase in power when its freezing cold compared to the middle of summer when its boiling hot. This is due to cold air being more dense than hot air, therefore in winter more oxygen is sucked in by the engine than summer.

Mine was just enjoying the skidding around this morning (well, would have if the traction control didn't keep kicking in) - does that count as a reduction in hp?

The only thing I can say is that the Ms hate the cold, when its below 0 they are even more notchy, but once warmed up no problems.

My Z doesnt have a heated screen, but my cooper S does and its wonderful. The Cooper sits outside tho and the Z in the garage so no need for the heated windscreen :D

its no real problem just need some de-icer :) but im not so convinced about getting that on the hood so didnt bother on the rear screen.

There are two things that will increase air density, air pressure and temperature. If you have a high air pressure in the area (say 1030mb) then the air at sea level is denser and better for combustion. As you go higher (say into the mountains) air pressure reduces and so combustion performance will reduce. The amount is not huge, but for very 30 feet climbed, pressure will reduce by 1mb.

Temperature has a bigger effect. for every degree increased, it is the same as climbing 120 feet.

As a bonus, the less dense the air, the less drag and so the car should go slightly quicker at a higher height or a lower pressure. This is, however, not enough to offset the gain in combustion and any gain will be small.

All in all a lot of theory to say that the nearer to sea level you can be with the coldest temperature and highest air pressure, the better the engine will perform.

Simples :D

True, but if you're using the heater fan, the lights, the heated seats, maybe the wipers, these will all use some of the power.

heated seats are great but heated steering wheel  that was THE best extra on any motor ive owned

unlike at 6-40 am today in my transit with gloves & hat on for first 15mins

cold air definatly made the westfield more pokey and i didnt have to worry about the heater, fan, seats, wipers, washers or radio zapping the power as it didnt have any :D

deffo. wasnt it a ford patent for ages tho so no one could copy it. The only other car i know of it on is the mini.

My Freelander 2 had a heated screen. I'm sure other marques have it.

your FL2 was developed during Ford PAG days hence the heated screen .. Based on Focus platform too

Transits are the worst

I used to be able to get to work before the bloody thing had started blowing out warm air
