Cold Air Intakes

Relatively new here and I'll do a search....that said does anyone have experience of Injen products, I'm interested in an intake as described here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=764754
and am unable to source in the UK

Z4's do come with cold air intakes in stock form. The injen intake you posted is not a cold air intake.
 
actually that kinda is a cold air intake, although it could be better with heat sheilds

the point of a cold air intake is for the engine to draw in air that is coming from outside the car vs. in the engine bay where the air is "hot". the injen one in the picutre is placed where the air funnels into the car from the outside via the kidney grills, so i guess you can say that technically it is a CAI. but i would guess that the air in there is mixed between "cold air" from the outside and "hot air" since it's so close to the engine without a heat shield.

of course, on a really hot and muggy day, it won't matter since the air outside and inside your engine could be at nearly the same temperature
