Coil packs

Afternoon all, having a problem sourcing coil packs for my 3.0si. Ordered some from ECP but the arrived with a central tab where the ones on mine are to the left(pic of mine attached). GSF were the same, went into ECP and really helpful lad on the counter ran the part number from which came back as the ones with the centre tab. Does anyone know where I can get replacements, I've checked all sites but none of them show a clear pic of that small plastic tab

TIA jay

Firstly, I accept you want the proper items:
HJowever, given the shape of the plug, does the tab actually achieve anything? Could it be removed?

No problem.

Just have a look at a similiar thread in the German ZRoadster forum, where I've collected lots of details regarding this topic.

My final solution was, to carefully extend the current slot on the plugs.

"Be careful, the old connector material is so brittle that it will chip away!
First, carefully try a narrow cut with a new and sharp pair of Knipex side cutters, otherwise the connector will be completely destroyed in no time."

At least the some solution, BMW proposes:

The plug has a slot in it which won't allow it to engage as the tab on the replacement is in a central position. Didn't want to cut out the tab as I'm thinking there must be variations in the coil packs hence the protective tabs

Looks like @RobbiZ4, and BMW themselves, have a similar solution.

I see what you have done there but wasn't sure about removing the tab. May be easier to slice out the tab with a new Stanley blade than risk messing with a 20 year old plug

Hi James,
Don't know if this info will be of any use to you but I bought a new set of six Delphi coil packs for my 2007 2.5si from Autodoc last year (product number GN10571-12B1). They've been working great.
Hope you get the 3.0 si sorted.
I seem to remember you were on the Mid Wales run organised by r2uzenblot back in 2022. I really enjoyed that day.
Robert.

Thanks for all the replies, got this sorted now.
The lad from ECP did eventually find on with the tab in the right place but I had already sorted it with advice from here.

I didn't fancy messing with the old plugs so I took a sharp chisel to the coil pack itself and removed the tab. Slotted pack in to place great and now running fine again

G29?🧐

I didn't see this at the time but went through all this palarver a few months ago. Went to borrow an E91 318i coil from a neighbour (it lost an argument with a lorry coming the other way) to eliminate a slight misfire and found the same thing. Eventually ascertained the connections were in the same order and they'd simply moved the keying as part of a parts revision. Trimmed off the injector's key with the intention of swapping it along all 6 until I found the duffer. And....

... it turned out that simply pulling the plugs and coils to check for anything obvious cured the problem!
